And don't forget the secondary use of one shot Barbies, ideal for igniting the local moorland.

The two Blitish hot sunny afternoon preoccupations, Burning food outside or some plat with a strimmer.

      Regards Ian.

Its the folk who set fire to their compost heap every time the sun comes out who bug me

The local allotments have a pick up point for organic stuff but some users still like a forest fire on a sunny day

I think the most civilised method of barbequing that I came across was in a restaurant in Madison in the US, in the centre of the restaurant was a raised pit full of glowing charcoal and nearby was a bank of chiller cabinets that contained various generous sized cuts of steak. The customer chose his steak and then took it to the charcoal and grilled it to his choice, when cooked he helped himself to the accompaniments that were ranged on a serverey alongside and then consumed at his leisure. The restaurant was a welcome refuge to the weather outside which was approaching 20 degrees below, I never thought that I would be having barbecued food when the weather was so cold outside. Dave W

I have a gas-fired BBQ which I don't use as much as my wife's Canadian cousins (one uses his in the dead of winter – it's sited right outside his kitchen door) but I think the main difference between using gas versus an (open) charcoal one (and I do still have a portable BBQ that uses charcoal) – is that I 'think' of the gas fired BBQ as an oven – and use it as such. Everything is well cooked/baked in it before it gets a final 'flash' directly on the bars. Charcoaled Bangers are a thing of the past.

Does it taste any better? Well I think so, provided several glasses of wine/beer are consumed in a shady spot prior to sitting down and consuming it.

            Regards,

The Cob BBQ is a brilliant device. I carried one on my sailing boat. It can be used on any flat surface as the bottom does not get hot. It has the ability to BBQ a sausage or cook a full roast dinner. The Cob Cobblestones are smokeless so you stand a chance of not upsetting your neighbour's. I wouldn't be without mine.

What needs to be remembered in all this talk of barbies is that it is part of a social interaction, not as a means of just cooking food. If you were just wanting to cook something you would use your regular hob/oven/grill in the kitchen; cooking on the barbie is therefore just part of a social gathering and, mostly, a very pleasant one too!

Working in Jeddah in the early 80's, the children's favourite was the 'China Rose' restaurant. Not for the restaurant but for the Mongolian Barbeque.

A 4-foot dia cast iron plate, a central hole in the floor and a turbo-driven wood fired heat source on the floor below, sparks and all.
That was interesting for me but for the kids it was the chefs actions.
Having taken a plate and filled a container with meats/vegs/sauces it was handed over to the chefs.
The container was thrown onto the plate, always with extra soy sauce, and manipulated with 3-foot chop-sticks.
After 15 seconds or so and several stirs it was ready and the chef held the plate in one hand and with a swoop of the chop-sticks it was swept onto the plate and handed over. So fascinating that the children would find excuses to go back again (and again )

Looks to be a common enough job.

I've just retired from the cheffing game and the thing that has always puzzled me is this. Why does average guy who never cooks decide to give it a go outdoors in the rain using a method invented by a bloke in a cave several millenia ago? Back then the cooking was hit and miss, cave blokes food was lucky to be dead let alone cooked when he ate it so no one was bothered by the results, but we've moved on chaps. So why?

You assume that many of us have moved on but many of us have not

                        It's Darwinism, tribalism etc

Many of us still support a tribe who kick a little round thing about in a stadium, shouting with delight and jumping up and down when our own tribe puts the little round thing into the other tribes net bit, or crying in public if they do the net thing to your tribe
