Listing of “Antique Ornamental Treadle lathe” on ebay

The question is what is the attachment to the rear of the headstock. The seller doesn’t know but sadly failed to provide decent pictures of it. Seems to be a form of spiralling mechanism if the spindle moves longitudinally.
