At the price of a proper linisher I feel that it would work out expensive for the amount of time I would make use of it.

What are the thoughts on this or similar machines under different names to be used instead. It would need a better rest if suitable but that is not a problem

I use one of the ubiquitous 1″ belt and 5″ disc sanders which retail for around £100.  It works fine for rounding the corners of steel or ally parts.  It seems powerful enough, I have not managed to stall the belt.  As you suggest, the tables are a bit flimsy but I haven’t got around to doing anything about that yet!

A linisher is for flattening material when horizontal but can be used for rounding corners or squaring off stock in vertical

I have a six inch linisher for horizontal use and a 1 inch vanco vertical for cleaning up metal.

If it’s light use look at a belt and disc machine rather than with a grinding wheel.

As I said the use is important so look at what you want to do and buy an appropriate machine. Clarke are OK but not terribly robust

I made the one from MEW back in the 90’s and its been running ever since. belts 2in wide so you have to halve a 4 inch but works well. Really good for fine finishing HSS tools.

Thank you both, I already have THIS machine but use that for my woodworking. The reason for the one I linked to earlier was so I could fit a scotch bright style wheel (see below and yes I know I will need to replace the spindle for it) instead of the grinding wheel, as I have a bench grinder with two different grits and also a wet grinder for woodworking chisels and the like.

              grinders (2)

This one will be used for small work not to take large metal off and rounding corners, it will also replace an old clarkes wet grinder

This is my grinding set up, the slow grinder front right is what I am replacing. It is on wheels so I can move it where needed

              grinders (1)

My woodworking belt/disc sander is elsewhere in the workshop
