      Hello guys, a littler help needed.

      I recently purchased a new rotary table from Warco and proceeded to drill the holes on my 10V cylinder. I have managed to drill the 7ba clears fine and in the perfect centric locations using the new rotary table, on the cylinder cover and base. A few days later i returned to drill out the holes on the top and bottom of the cylinder. Whoops, this is where it all went tits up. The fixing holes are out of alignment and are not centric to the base and cylinder cover. I've got a rough idea what went wrong, plus it doesn't help that the new rotary table isn't true. Anyway, I now need to repair the cylinder so I can re-drill the 10 7ba clear and tapp holes. Whats the best practice for this other than buying a new casting. I thought maybe drill out again and plug with cast iron pins???? I am new to this so please be kind. Thanks all.

          Is the casting cast iron or bronze?

          I would make threaded plugs big enough to accommodate the redrilled & tapped holes in a similar material to the casting and screw them in using Loctite or similar permanent adhesive. It used to be No 601 but I'm not sure of any new materials.

          Then drill and tap in the correct places. I'm suggesting screwing them in because they will need to withstand the pressure of air or steam.

          You won't be the first of us to have a mishap, the important thing is to be able to work around it.

            +1 for Brian's comment; I had similar issues with my 10V on a couple of holes I drilled & tapped out to 3mm, used a couple of studs Loctited in, then re-drilled & tapped to correct size. Another method I use; for ref. is I keep a tin with a small amount of cast filings / small swarf crushed up, then when needed mix up with 2 part epoxy resin to form a paste then fill holes & let set overnight, carefully drill for hole centre & redrill / tap. the cast filings provide the base metal to match the original & the epoxy the binder & hardener. I have also used JB weld or similar in other instances.

              Yes its cast iron. Thanks for you advice I shall ponder over it and see what happens. Regarding cast iron studs, the smallest bar I can find is 25mm round. I take it acquiring something smaller in diameter is impossible to find, just wasn't happy with the waist being machined from 25mm round. So far the 10V has been machined really well, this was the last major machining required before a strip down and clean up, to say I'm gutted is an understatement. Oh well, on wards and upwards.                 To clarify; the studs I used were MS studs, just ensure that you hit the centre otherwise the drill will wander into the softer cast, use the smallest centre drill there is… #1 iirc, & peck away at it 'till the pilot bit gives you the deepest lead in then follow up with the drill you need… 2.1 for tapping & 2.6 for clearance.

                  Richard you can make your cast iron plugs by sawing down the length of a bit of round bar a few times to give you some small squarish sections that can then be held in the 4-jaw to be turned down to size and threaded.  Or if you don't have a 4-jaw then cut the round into six by making 3 cuts through the ctr of teh bar and the almost triangular segments can be held in the 3-jaw.

                  Another source of small bits of CI is to keep any chucking spigots that are cast into kit parts. If you keep both materials the same the drill is less likely to want to wander away from teh harder material into the softer one.

                      Richard, without knowing how much the holes are off, it could be easier to draw the holes in the covers to match the holes in the cylinder. If this would be blindingly obvious when done, Then don't do it. Incidentally when I undertake such a job, I generally make the covers and then use these to spot through and position the holes in the cylinders. It is generally easier to hold the covers in the chuck on a rotary table than hold the cylinder.
