      Hi

I own a Harrison M20 lathe and am looking at obtaining and fitting a DRO system on the lathe

I am a complete novice in regards to mechanical engineer but am desperate to learn all I can

Has anyone here fitted one to a such a lathe and what systems would you all recommend there seems to be many on eBay but as always im looking to get hold of a quality system so any recommendations would be great

      thanks

          Hi Nathan
It depends on your budget; look at ….

          also look at…

parts 1-2-3 installing DRO on his Harrison 140 which is similar in size to your M250

            .

I have a similar sized lathe to the M250 and used one of these consoles on it. **LINK**

I would on such a small machine as ours also recommend using magnetic scales over the more common glass encoders. Unfortunately slightly more expensive but a much, much smaller profile so you don't lose very little of the machines already restricted capacity.

The system I fitted to my M250 uses Sino display (which I bought secondhand) and an optical scale fixed along the back of the bed using existing tapped holes. There is plenty of room at the back of the bed so the size of the scale is not important and optical ones are generally cheaper.

For the cross slide I used a magnetic scale because it only adds 10mm to the right hand edge of the casting which is pretty insignificant.

There is a lot to be said for a pick-and-mix DRO setup, most scales (magnetic, optical types) have similar outputs so can be selected to suit the location.
