      Hi all,

I’m a new member and I am looking forwards to contributing where I can.

I’m a engineer with about 40 odd years of experience mainly on machine tools. I have just purchased a lathe miller to start to make some bit’s n bobs for a project motorbike I have that you struggle to purchase parts for.

It will probably take me a week or so to get it set up, but looking forwards to turning some parts for the old Honda to get her back up and running.

My main experience is Milling Turning Grinding and also did a few years on CNC lathes.

Welcome.  Hope you have success getting the Honda running.

Do you have any contacts in the ” Classic Machine Tool” dealerships?  Looking for a Clarkson Mk2 Spindle Head.

Welcome Nigel, You will be amongst friends here, there are many on here with bikes both new and old. If you have any questions then just ask, replies are normally fairly quick. Best wishes, Noel.

            Hi David,

I had been out of actual engineering for 18 odd years, after 25 odd solid years I got fed up with it, and a fair few of the old firms I knew back in the day as I say have sadly gone.

Before I get on to me and my set up, can I ask Dave what’s up with y our existing head on your Clarkson cutter grinder?

There is another trade where you can’t find many firms that will do that, so if you know and have machines to re sharpen cutters then that’s pure gold.

I decided to purchase a Centurion 800 lathe miller and it’s just been delivered, now I originally decided to get just the drip tray but not the mounting bench they sell, I’m beginning to think that may have been a  mistake.

If any of you can offer any advice on best ways on what to mount this machine, it weighs in a nearly 400KG.

A bit more on me, I mainly worked on Millers Drillers, lathes, surface grinders, centre-less grinders and most saws and CNC lathes, had a really good job turning aircraft engine parts for Rolls Royce at one time.

I also worked on a few bespoke machines too and ran a set up for one company and set up my own engineering company in the 80’s.

So this machine when I get it set up and working my first part will be for the Honda, well there is 2 actually for the carbs.

I will have to see if I can remember everything I learnt, but it’s pretty much like riding a bike, you never forget.

One of the things I used to find useful was tinkering, when I say that, tinkering with different speeds, feeds, and some times cutting fluids because they all play a key role in what finishes we obtain when cutting materials. I’m still learning now.

Lastly guys if you ever need anything you can’t get hold of let me know, because I now work for a big tooling supplier.

            All the best Nige

              Thank’s Noel,

yes we are a big biking family, I have a R6, and the VFR400 Honda, my oldest Son has a R6 and a Ducati Hypermotard, and my youngest son a MT07 and wife a Yamaha 125.

I usually do nearly all the service work on the bikes, that’s the beauty of being a engineer we can pretty much turn our hands to anything. This in turn saves us a fortune on service fees.

And if I can’t do it my oldest Son works for a Yamaha main dealer as a mechanic & mot’s them so we have pretty much most things covered.

As you probably know many of the older models parts are obsolete now so buying a hobby lathe miller is just the ticket.

It would appear that my Mk2 Clarkson has a Hybrid Spindle.  Belt side accommodates two pulleys, but the Wheelside is the stubby Mk1 size?

So, really I’m trying to find a Mk2 Spindle, which would be more likely to be in good condition if still installed in the Head.Screenshot_20250701-114936_Chrome

Clearly states in the item description that the drill grinding attachment is NOT included in this sale!
