Hi all just started back on my model for the winter period…………….. Now that I have most of it built I really need to take a serious look at getting a boiler design sorted I know all the sizes and wp I would like but designing it is completely a miss for me…….

BBassicly needs to be 20 inches long end to end

        5 inches diameter

Working pressure of around 100 psi

        Ideally gas fired

thinking twin flues with 2 burners and multi cross tubes

Basiccly that's pprett much what I require does any on on here think that would be possible to design

Michael is this for the PYRTE traction engine?

Can't think of anything else that uses a similar sized gass fired boiler so not much to point you to as a guide but take a look at some of the marine boilers.

Would also help to know the likely amount of steam you need the boiler to produce.

Hi Jason yh it is for the pyrte but the design has changed greatly and is now a lot bigger and in a wagon style model apose to a traction engine…….. How do I work out how much steam I need to produce?

I don't mind designing my own boiler if someone could lead me in the right directions for the calculations used to work out tube thickness etc?

I already have a good idea of the design wanted/needed thru looking and researching on google and wikki

Joining a club for me at the moment is no option to me due to not driving so will have to be designed in house so to speak although I will get the design approved by a boiler inspector etc

I just need the basic info to set me on my way

From other threads on here it seems most club inspectors use formulas based on Martin Evan's book "Model locomotive boilers: their design and construction" and the other book worth reading is K N Harris's "Model Boilers and Boiler Making"

If you are going for firetube and cross tubes then Ramon built a nice one for his launch boiler starts about here

                Hi

If you pm me a sketch of the boiler with key dims and what material you want to use etc I would be happy to provide you with all the detail you need. I have no problem getting mine approved but oh, there is so much more to it than meets the eye!
