Miling a V

I want to make a second set of jaws for my machine vice with a vertical V in each one so I can hold round bar.

How do I go about milling the V??

I could see how I could do it if I could hold the job at 45° to the milling cutter but I can’t.

And where do you start the cut to end up with the base of the V in the right place?

Presumably the further away from the centre line you start, the deeper the V will be when the corner of your mill arrives at the centre line?

Hi

Can you tilt the head on the milling machine ? Or have you got a tilting angle plate?

spot drill?? Rather than corner of mill?…have even used center drill…the vee does not need to be 90 degree….does need to be equall

Hi Wolfie, we can tell you how to go about it but I normally use a vee block if I want to hold something vertically in a vice and thats not very often! Once the round bar gets very much above the jaws you will get rigidity problems if you are milling rather than drilling. Tilting your head is absolutely no problem and neither is getting it back to square to the table.

As an apprentice piece I made a pair of V Blocks on a shaper . using one long piece of steel Then cut it in half for a matched pair

I have made V-slots in mild steel very easily with a 45 degree chamfering end mill – see:

and if that doesn’t take you there directly, it’s in the current sales flyer, page 8 – cost £8.91 + VAT for smallest size, you might need aone a little bigger, depends how deep you want it. Just take it steady, don’t try to do it all at once, take a number of small cuts.

One way would be to first mill a slot and then use a 90 degree countersink as a milling cutter to create the vee.

Pair of angle plates can be set at any angle and your bar clamped to that then you can use a standard milling cutter and keep your head vertical. Or if you only have one angle plate it can be held at 45deg in your machine vice.

Hi Wolfie,

If you use the method of mounting the item at 45 deg then mark a line the depth of the V away from the centre line of the V (Above the centre line.) Position the cutter so the cutter teeth just touch this line. Lock the axis that is at right angles to the groove. Zero the Z axis reading where the cutter is just touching the line. Take cuts on the groove until you have moved the Z axis down 1.414 times the depth of the V (Root 2 – Good old Pythagoras.)

Hi Wolfie,

I would get a short piece of large angle, drill two holes through the apex of the angle (work from the inside), put a fence square from the apex across one face, use the holes to bolt the angle to the mill table forming an inverted V (ensuring the apex is parallel to one of the table axis). Now clamp your jaws against the fence and mill the groove with a standard cutter, if you do both at once and align them correctly then the groves will line up perfectly.
