        hi all,
At the beginning of 2011 i lost a very dear friend who was well into his steam to say the least. Anyway to cut a long story short i was left a few things. this being one of them. now i know he dididnt build it be he had it runing when he bought it and then stripped it down to repaint it and that is as far as it got. there are a few bits missing like the axle pump and some pipework but is mostly complete. my problem is i only have a very basic understanding of steam engine valve gear and workings so without a set of drawings to follow i cant rebulid it. ive been serching since march but i cannot find anything like it. does anyone on here recognise what it might be.
b.t.w it is 5 inch gauge.

          Hi Liam,

I think what you have there is a freelance loco, not one based on any particular prototype. It probably is not based on any published design either so you will be stuck for drawings etc. I presume it is a 2-6-4 tank loco. It looks like a steel boiler? If so, you will need to get it checked out and tested if possible before you go much further as it may not pass the current boiler tests. You say your friend had run it but does it have any boiler certificates at the moment? It would help get it retested if it did.

Sorry I can’t help any more,

          John

            hi john,
yes it is a 2-6-4 and yes it is a steel boiler but there was never a boiler certificate whilst in his possesion. i remember about 10 years ago him telling me it came from an auction of a decessed estate. prior to this it had been sitting on a shelf for 20+ years.

although more of an internal combustion man myself when it comes to understanding princibles i think the chassis looks quite similar to doug hewsons br standard class 4

            cheers,
            liam
