Can anyone recommend a book or two with small beginner type projects in? I’m more interested in tooling and stationary engines than anything else.

I made a tailstock die holder recently under the eye of a club colleague and I’m dead chuffed with it

I have the workshop practice series lathe one already

Spareys “The amateurs lathe” has a few bits ‘n bobs if you don’t have it, including basic drawings.

Get a cheapo green fronted paperback version, you’ll be glued to it.

I got a first edition then realised I was going to wreck it with the amount of use it was getting in my early lathe days.

Spareys book is pretty much the holy grail for a lathe newbie.

Hi Wolfie,

Tubal Cain wrote a couple of books outlining a series of simple steam engines, in fact the engine used in the SMEE training workshop sessions use a version of his ‘Polly’ steam plant from his book. It has very good instructions on the making of parts including boilers as well as some discussion on the theory, A very good starter for the tyro builder. As Graham I have a spare hardback copy which you could have for the cost of postage. Just pm me.

I also have a very good book by Stan Bray (1st editor of MEW) who wrote it for beginners, there are some good engines there and he then goes further and shows how to make desirable bits such as regulators, reversers. displacement oilers and safety valves etc. I can let you have a copy of that too. just pm me and they are yours. You may not like the engines but they are full of hints and tips on making stuff and most of the engines are built from bar stock with the occasional bought cast cylinder.
