Automatic drain cocks

Hi – my question is, do they have to be parallel with the ground to work or will they work in any orientation i.e. where the ball would have to move against gravity to close the valve?

I have automatic drain cox fitted horizontal (parallel to ground) and they work great, they do need the help of gravity to work as they rely on the different viscosity between water and steam to work, when you come to a stop with the regulator shut off they drop away from the drain hole under gravity and the water gets behind the ball so that when the pressure comes on again it hold them off until the water is ejected, the steam then closes them.

Thanks – so if they were at say 45 degrees to ground, with the ball having to move up hill to close the valve do you think they would still work?
