I need to turn a large radius curve on a length of mild steel round. There have been a number of articles on generating spherical surfaces using coordinates in the model engineering press, but I have not been able to find them no matter what key words I use in the various indexes. Can any one help me.

Do you have a CAD drawing program? easy enough using that. Just draw your curve and then add a series of evenly spaced lines that meet the curve and use the lengths of the lines to move the cross slide, carrage or topslide moves by the line spacing.

I drew the shape out on simple graph paper (downloaded and printed free from some website I found via google) and used the DRO numbers from that for the shape below..finished with filing. The same approach would work for a ball end.

Before CNC came in I spent my working life as a Die Miller/Spark Erosion machinist in the mould industry. Creating shapes from calculated sizes was an everyday thing. Sometimes to check my calculations I would draw the item out at 10 to 1 and measure it with a rule.

Where I worked as an apprentice we had a profile grinder that had a table for placing a drawing and some parallel arms(much like an engraver) linked to a eye viewer and a shadow screen, as you moved the pointer on the arms to different points on the drawing, you could then grind down to the cross hairs in the viewers by moving x and y handles of the fixture holding the tool. That's how we used to make profile lathe tools for the production/machine shop in the sixties.

How things have changed.

I've tried the Ballcut programme on Marv's site as it looked like it would give me what I want but I can't open the output file. Windows says " can't open file as I don't know which program made it" or words to that effect. I've tried opening it with the Ballcut programme but all it does is restart the programme.
