This week I thought I’d have a go at casting a part in brass. Admittedly it’s not a model engine part, and again it’s proof of principle.

This video comes with a word or warning. Molten brass is not nice and aside from the obvious problems of molten metal, the fumes are dangerous. Especially if you can’t accurately control the temperature. If you decide to give this a go then make sure you do your research, and make sure that you do what you need to do to keep yourself safe! Understand the risks and what you are going to do about them.

Nice. When I had a go at casting brass, under close supervision from my mentor, we used powdered glass as a flux which melted and sat on the surface of the molten brass protecting it from atmospheric oxygen. We had to be cautious because the laboratory we were doing this "experiment" in had a smoke sensor linked directly to the site fire station and there was always the risk of an eager fireman crashing through the door, axe in hand.

One of my ancestors is shown on the census as doing 'tub casting'

Not sure what that involves, but I presume it was some sort of back-yard foundry.
