      Hi

Excitedly fitted my new Glanze parting tool (the one with inserts, 12mm mounting size) to a (genuine Myford) QCTP holder on my ML7 …. and it's about 5mm too high of centre at its lowest adjustable height. Sad face

Even if I'd bought the 8mm mounting version it would be too high I suspect.

      Options:
      – mill off (a lot) of the Glanze holder mounting bar
      – mill off (quite a lot) of the bottom of the QCTP holder
      – a bit of both the above
      – something else?

      Ideas gratefully received.

PS from new out the pack, the insert is a very (very) loose fit in the blade – are you meant to somehow get it in a bit tighter and hope the cutting force seats it properly – it comes with no instructions!

      EDIT:typos

          Hi Martin,

Could you make a new parting holder that is held in a normal tool-bit holder? Something like Murray's drawing on this page but with the side bar higher up?

I think the inserts are self-tightening. The one I had a was self-shattering!

          Ed.

Interesting article – would be possible of course, but I paid good (and quite a lot) of money for the a proper Glanze set – holder, 2 blades, 4 inserts

See if you can exchange it for an 8mm one, if it still does not fit you only have a little to take off.

Are you using Myford holders on the QCTP as some of the other holders that are sold for a dickson type QCTP have a thicker bottom than others, still no good for the 12mm but may add a bit more to the 4mm drop from going to the 8mm holder.

Both the blade holder and QCTP holder are likely to be hardened to some extent.

If you tap the insert fully back in the holder is it still loose, use a nylon hammer or similar?

First time I used mine the tip just shot out, never seen since. The new spare was tapped in with a bit of brass, fine ever since. Must say I prefer the old HSS one.

For what's it's worth the Glanze holder was way off on my 8 x 14 Lathe as well. I had to make a new block for mine. It ended up a little too low for my four way so I've bolted a shim on the bottom!

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and have just come to use it this weekend. I bought the 16mm one as I have a Chester Craftsman lathe, and I have to have the QCTP holder wound right down to the bottom to get it on centreheight. There is about 1/16" clear from the bottom of the holder to the toolpost itself!

I must say that I had real issues parting off before, but with the Glanze unit I have no issues whatsoever! I just knocked the tip in with a block of Nylon that I had kicking around – As long as you're not too greedy with your feed, it works fine
