image.jpegimage.jpegCan anyone identify the attached piece of tooling I purchased it a while ago but cannot remember what for. Also it's a 2MT which does not fit the Drummonds 1MT how easy is to recut / grind a 1MT ? In fact most of my tooling cannot fir the Drummond, do I sell it on and get new stuff.

It's a boring head designed by G H Thomas and described in ME in the '80s

I made one with MT3 and slightly bigger all-round. A good design typical of GHT.

G'day Ian, It appears to be a tailstock taper turning attachment.

It also appears to be nicely made with the adjustable gibs and graduated offset dial.

Noway would I mess with the taper, to much chance of ruining it !

Agree with Clive GHT boring head. I have one identical to yours.

Can't remember if the MT can be changed. Will check tomorrow.

nerdThe good news about the taper is I have found an adaptor by Proops on a well known auction site so can leave as is .

I would be weary of using a boring head in a long step up adaptor as you will not have a very rigid setup and with little chance of being able to use a drawbar you could find one parting company with the other.

The taper should unscrew from the body and you can then fit the mounting of your choice. The thread detailed in GHT’s book is 5/8×16 but the builder may have deviated from the design. It is quite a big item to use on a no.1 taper and would really need a drawbar to use as a boring head. Using as an adjustable centre for taper turning would probably be ok but a waste of a much more useful tool.
