what to do with an old water pump

Stripped down the impellers of an old water pump, seal failed and hard to source a new one, so it sat in Back garden couple of years. Recently decided I wanted a disc sander, so I bought a couple of 225mm grit discs, OK just need the rest of it !

TTESTED the pump motor, it was smooth and quiet and ran at 3000rpm . The motor shaft is 13mm, I found a nylon replacement wheel 80mm for an industrial castor it had a poorly molded 12ish mm hole. Put it in myford and hand turned lathe to drill to 13mm ( my ml1 has no drive train yet ) this resulted in and excellent interference fit.

Jigsawed a 225mm disc of 11mm ply and filed to near circular and glued the grit disc on it . Trued the the disc with a carbide tipped tool. casing very basic as the sanded is a means to an end, may improve it at a later date.

This tool is amazing, I will remake it entirely later on , when my ML1 is up and running

Good idea, I've got a few laid about from worn out well pumps but the 3000 revs made me think not worth it.

is that a dimmer switch on the top ? how do u get on with it……?

cheap and cheerfull is def the way to go……good on u…….

AND, some of them you can reverse! (No idea why, but mine did).

This pump seemed a good choice as being multi impellor it has a nice long shaft

3000rpm……duno how fast do disc sanders normally go ?

i felt a toggle or normal light switch on top may be operated when things get plonked on top, and if i had forgotten to unplug it it could be dangerous, so a rotating switch seemed good, the dimmer does work a bit, it starts at 2500ish and contols it up to 3000, yup useless, but is safe considering i know how i am !

today i fitted the cooling fan and the cowling to the other end of the motor, switched it on and instantly i looked like a snowman, it needs to suck and not blow !

reverseing the motor……..sure it can be done but i dont know how this motor has a starting capacitor, motors with no capacitor you just reverse the polarity of the start windings, i would guess similar is true of this motor.

yes my workshop is on a shoe string.

really is good to find like minded people, on the same page as me
