I have just acquired a Viceroy 280vs lathe, can someone kindly tell me what oil I need to use in the gearbox. Thanks Alan

Hi Alan,

Welcome to the forum. This manual says Shell Vitrea 68 (may be called Shell Morlina S2 B68 now).

Hi all,

I use Dextron, Automatic gearbox oil, it's non frothing……before anyone says to much about the quality of the Auto/g/oil…..also used in the average power steering system……..

That Mercedes Sprinter that overtakes u on the Motorway at 100mph carring a 1 ton payload uses the same oil in it's manual gearbox's…….mine did over 200,000miles with no trouble…..

I put Halfords gearbox oil in my Lathe.

Buy any "DIN" 68 spec oil and use it in the head and slideways. Lots of lathes use "DIN" 32 oil in the headstock.

Hi Alan I suggest you take a look at the popular and well informed "Lathes" website under the Viceroy VS lathes there is a warning marked up in red about using the correct oil,

Beware of using any old gearbox oil containing EP additives. Many of them are known to attack and corrode yellow metals such as bronze, brass and copper which are commonly found in lathe gearboxes.

Shell Vitrea, and its replacement Shell Morlina is a plain mineral oil specifically formulated for applications that DO NOT require EP additives and is therefore safe for use on yellow metals.
