A friend has recently given me some old Taps & Dies, mostly Whitworth or BSF.

Some are made by LAL Ltd, and others just have a logo and "Made in England" on them, but no makers name. the logo is three triangles nested together – I have tried to show it in the photo attached. Does anyone know who made these – I am just curious.

(By the way – if it is blinkin' obvious to you engineers out there I claim ignorance because I trained as an accountant! )

                .

Looks like you won the bet laugh

Thanks for the good thoughts … Cardiac surgery is all healed-up now, and Surgeons and Physiotherapists have signed me off 'to the care of my GP'. Just need to steadily build my strength up.

P.S. My iPad is nearly always logged-on, although I may not actually be present.

You have a Triangle tap there

                  http://www.npking.com/brand_triangle.php

I have a three piece set of them complete with box marked triangle.

In my book, Triangle, LAL are good quality British made taps, HSS no doubt. Treat them with respect and they will serve you well.

Things are not always what they seem (or say on the tin). I have a friend whose job in the 1970s included this operation:

Undo packs of taps & dies imported from Israel but unmarked. Etch on each one the words 'Made in England' and rewrap in packing with Arabic lettering, for export.

                      Make yer think, dunnit …?

                      Tim

                        .

It took all of 2 seconds for me to think why that was done. angel

                          Coincidence? I was given a set of LAL ME taps and dies this week. 1/8, 3/16 , and 1/4 " x 40.
They seem very good, no idea how old they are.

Thanks all. I had not heard of Triangle before, but they come recommended so that's good.

Are LAL and Triangle the same make?

As to the age, one of the dies have the millitay arrows marking and is date stamped 1942. Fine for my very light use, but I wonder if they would be HSS or a Hydra type steel.

My first set of taps and dies were a LAL boxed set bought 50 years ago when I was an apprentice. I have replaced a couple of taps through wear and breakage but otherwise the set remains in regular use.
