When I bought my second hand lathe some years ago it came with lots of useful stuff, but one item that I have never found a use for is pictured here. Any ideas what it is?
Brilliant! It's so obvious now. The words swing clear and swing back gave it more meaning for me. I just sat it on the lathe cross-slide to have a look at how it would work. Thanks
Martin Cleeve's articles are in ME Vol 116 of 1957. I don't know if Martin invented this design but he was very enthusiastic about it and wrote about the advantages and methods of working.
Can also be used for screwcutting and in fact all turning to save losing your place by retracting the cross slide to wind the dsaddle back. There should be a height setting screw in the hole nearer the pivot.

Well spotted.
