In the introductory article for building a portable engine (ME 4399 ) the author mentions making the cylinder out of cast iron bar to cut down the expense of castings but then goes on to suggest having the boiler professionally built.
What would be the cost of having such an item made.

Well as we don’t have the dia, length and thickness of the boiler yet its a bit hard to say , Also we don’t know what size the original was, a small 2hp engine will have a smaller boiler than a 8hp. I have seen a picture of the back end of this portable next to a 2″ Fowler and would say the boiler dia is 3 1/2 to 4″ dia, and maybe 6″ back wheels

Based on my 2″ Fowler that I had made about 3 years ago and the fact copper prices and VAT have gone up I would say £1000-1500. Depending on whether you go for silversoldered or TIG welded copper.
