Living on La Palma, one of the smaller of the Canary Islands, my contact with others interested in model engineering is, except via internet, non existent. I am therefore looking into the possibility of making a visit to one of the British model engineers exhibitions – but which one should I chose?

Only been to Harrogate for the last two years as my first toe dipping into the world of ME. Stocked up on tooling and material. Thoroughly love wandering about, looking at the stalls and the models and chatting to people. Hope to get to the Midlands one for the first time next month and have high hopes for there.

                Hi Goran

It depends what you like to see. If it’s high quality model engineering at its absolute best you will not find a better exhibition than the Model Engineer Exhibition at Sandown Park, 9th to 11th December. As has been said, you will be most welcome and I hope that if you decide to visit us you will come and ‘meet the editors’ – we will be there every day – as will many of the regular writers, not to mention a terrific display by the SMEE who not only exhibit a great display of models but also put on workshops, demonstrations and provide a ‘model enigneers’ clinic’ for those looking for advice, guidance or inspiration. You will also find the best British traders there too.
It is definitely the best show in the UK for exhibits (and I’ve seen them all!).
                Other exhibitions are available

PS – bring a bag of sunshine with you! We will be needing it in December.

I am principally interested in tools and materials.

                    Hi, Goran,

I have the same problem as you – not even any modellers in Romania. I know you said shows in England, but if you get the chance, go to the show in Karlsruhe, Germany between 12 to 15th January – this used to be held in SInsheim, then moved to Karlsruhe – way better than any of the English shows. (IMO)

That is an interesting suggestion! Germany is normally easier than GB to reach from here.

                          HI Goran,

Nice to communicate, I often read your postings on other forums. I have visited all of the UK exhibitions and reckon that the Midland is the best. All of the traders and most of the model societies from the UK are there. There are very good lectures and demonstrations (my favourite are the foundry based ones) and the outside exhibitions of live steam are second to none (traction engines, locomotives and even a steam calliope at my last visit). Travel and parking is very easy also.

My second favourite is the ME one at Sandown, the outside display is not so good as at the Midland, but I have not seen any lectures etc if any. I was very disappointed by Alexandra Palace as there was no outside live steam or demonstrations etc, just traders wanting my money and a few societies and it was extremely crowded at my last visit as there was another exhibition in the adjacent hall and space in the hall is limited.

I’ve not been to Germany so cannot comment.

                          Hope to see you sometime

                          Best regards

Hi, I have to admit that overall I like the Midlands one most of all, but the other three, i.e. Harrogate, Sandown and Ally Pally are also very good for their own merit.

I like to see whats available (even if I don’t buy) from the various traders, as much as looking at the superb models etc.

                            Regards Nick.

                              Hi Goran,

I’m not going to recommend an exhibition to visit, because I only ever go to the one in Harrogate, but when choosing, do bear in mind that even in summer the UK and Germany may feel pretty cool to someone from La Palma. Late autumn, winter and early spring would definitely require investment in warm clothing!

Thanks Andy for your warning! That could turn out expensive but I came from Sweden originally and I do still have some suitable clothing.

It seems that the Midlands exhibition is the one most accessible travel wise from here. How many days do one really need to go through it leisurely? Are any of the days more important than the others?

                                    Goran,
It can be done in a day but two days is nice.
Show runs from Friday 14th to Tuesday the 18 th.
Best to give Friday a miss as it gets really crowded, most people in this hobby are retired and they always come on a Friday to miss the weekend rush instead they are the rush.

On the Friday it’s hectic and most traders are two busy to talk to you or offer advice, Saturday and Sunday are far more relaxed and enjoyable.

Yorkshire is known as ‘Gods Country’ by everyone here in the UK and the people are some of the most freindly and generous you will ever meet – so you should come to the Harrogate shown in May.

I try to spend a day at the Midands exhibition each year. At the start there is the highest chance of finding good second hand deals, near the end some of the sellers start discounting a bit more…

Friday is good as it’s a bit quieter than the weekend.
