      Hi all,

One of the chucks that came with an S&B Model A I acquired is of an unfamiliar type (to me) and pretty useless for my needs, being too big, heavy and awkward for my old hands.

It’s 165mm diameter, with four jaws which are self centring but individually capable of adjustment on the jaw bases. Presumably it’s intended for turning batches of irregular shaped parts. I’ve taken the backplate off to use with a smaller standard 4 jaw.

Does anyone have any experience/information of this type of chuck?

I’ve attached a couple of images of the thing (I think). Thanks.P1011121P1011123

You seem to have the best of two worlds.

If the jaws can be individually adjusted, it can centre work as accurately as you want, provided that you have the equipment, time and motivation.

I wouldn’t be without my four jaw independent chucks.

Not used all the time, but necessary for accurately centred, eccentric, or non round work

For most work, 0.0005″ (0.012 mm) will suffice for my work.

            Thanks Nick, Howard,

Now I know what the thing’s called. The only marking I can find on it, apart from some numbering, is “TG”.

From the Hoffmann site it looks likely to have cost someone a lot but it’s worth nothing to me – too heavy and I suspect a bit hard on the S&B’s mandrel bearings because of the weight.

I’d be happy to pass it on to anyone who had a use for it and is willing to collect. I think it’s more suited to a 6 or 7″ centre height machine with roller bearings.

It’s in good nick and I’ve got the two keys somewhere.

Thanks again for taking the trouble to reply.

            Steve
