Rob Roy stretchers

Not long started a Rob roy but need confidence in design of one of the stretchers. The drawing show a semi-circular cut and one of the books shows U cut out. Which is best and I assume the cut out is on the off-side of the engine. Please can you assist?

If you mean the cut out in the rear stretcher for the boiler blowdown valve then mine is U shaped about 7/16 deep and 7/8 wide. It is on the left hand side of the engine looking forwards.

Whilst thinking about stretchers I had to mill pockets in the underside of the large central stretcher to clear the eccentric straps but that might be my slightly agricultural straps.

Forgot to ask if the u shaped cut out on the Rob Roy stretcher is on the top edge or bottom edge. The cut out is apparently on the left side looking forward. Can you clarify before I get cutting and fixing.

I haven't assembled my frames but I have the Rob Roy book which seems to indicate the top edge for the cut out. If you look at the drawing showing the boiler backhead – you should see the blowdown valve which would clash with the top left hand side of the vertical stretcher as you look forwards.
