Can someone help me post a photo as my avatar which is in the correct orientation, every time I have tried it ends up 90 degrees rotated. What I am I doing wrong or not doing?

Dave, not sure its the same but I have just had a similar problem on our village site that we advertise on and the photo's were taken on a smart phone and that was the problem — the webmaster sorted it but I don't know how

          Over to Neil maybe ?

Rotate it in a proper image editing program, then re-upload.

Could you not take the photo at 90 degrees to what you want it to upload at? wink 2

If only it were that easy!

Quite a good description of what causes the problem here if you want details. Suffice it to say that the article concludes 'To sum everything up: The Exif Orientation Tag is a mess and the world would be a better place without it. There are so many ways where subtle brokenness of one piece of software can screw up everything that it’s just not funny anymore.'

As Neil says the best solution is to use image editing software to nail the picture's orientation manually. Basically, you look at the picture, use the image editor to turn the picture until it looks the right way up, and save it. That overrides the ambiguous orientation guessed by the camera with your simple sensible view..

Gimp and Photoshop both do the job but are a steep learning curve for casual users. I believe most of the simpler photo editors also work. Unfortunately I can't recommend any because I don't use them! Perhaps someone else can help?

Many thanks for your help Guys, I will as suggested orientate the image with image processing software and then try reloading it, and yes it was a photo taken with a phone camera.

If you're using Win10 the 'photo gallery has a editing process that you can manipulate / rotate your pic to the correct orientation then 'save as' in your particular 'My pics' folder , or wherever you store your pics.

Alternatively you can use an EXIF Editor to remove all the unwanted c**p.

If you take pictures with a phone or tablet don’t use portrait mode and make sure the lens is oriented near the top edge. Never had a problem doing this and no need to mess about with an editor.

Again many thanks for your help, especially Vic as I think that his tip should help my problem.

Some of the rotation functions (eg in photo viewer / editors) don't work so well with some sites such as this. My iPhone and Windows 10 cause consistent problems with orientation. The only foolproof way to get pics to upload correctly here is to open them briefly in Microsoft Paint, click anywhere in the photo (which actually inserts a tiny dot), then close and allow it to save. I spent ages buggering about (and failing) with "rotation" before realising I was wasting my time. It's now my standard process for uploading pics onto this site.

I even uploaded a series of photos with different manipulations applied to work out what was going on. Many of the "foolproof" methods described simply don't work for my situation and there are many occasions when you want to take portrait or landscape views.
