I finally have my myford ML10 up and running. I have been doing some cutting on steel, and want to invest in a drill chuck for it.

What chuck drill size capacity should I be looking for? Does anyone have a link to some good options?

Hi Jeremy you should start with a 13mm chuck as that gives you the bigest range of drill size. The other option is to either a hand tight or chuck key type personally I like the hand tight style and a quality one is made by Rohm but other makes are available. If you can try and borrow or try other people's before you buy and buy as quality as you can afford as if for instance the chuck dosnt repeat when center drilling all drills will run out and not be concentric.

I was in the same position when I bought the Super 7. Bought one at the Rufforth autojumble new for £18. None descript make. 10 minutes later went to a stall & got 2 2nd hand chucks for something like a tenner. 1 Jacobs & the other a keyless fancy make one. From none to 3 in ten minutes. Never mind always handy to have. Best of luck getting sorted out.

I had a Jacobs 13mm with my Speed 10. I liked it enough to keep it – it's now on my Warco WM250V and in regular use. Don't know how the keyless ones could be any better – Jacobs is the sort I learned on in the 70s and they've always done what was needed.

If you fancy a Rohm keyless chuck, look at Tracy Tools. They were selling them for quite a good price.

I have two, (one for the Lathe and the other for the Mill/Drill )and now use them most of the time, rather than keyed types.

I, as said have both at hand but have only used the keyless so far. Even drilling 19mm hole with a reduced shank drill. Not once has it slipped. They do seem very good.

Most of my drill-chucks are keyed Jacobs, but I bought a keyless for my lathe as an experiment. The advantage is keyless chucks are quick in operation – no faffing with chuck keys, especially lost keys and wrong keys. Easy.

I didn't expect the keyless chuck's grip to be as effective as a well tightened Jacobs but it is! The design is effective however they work inside. Although mine has holes for a C-Spanner, never had to use more than my hand.

Only the price is off-putting. I haven't bothered to replace my Jacobs Chucks. Despite being more fussy, they work well and I'm not in a rush.

I have a 16mm keyless chuck,3mt used on a Colchester easy and quick to use ,snags are it does not grip smaller than 3 mm drills and when used for holding taps its ok for tapping go into reverse to get the tap out the hole and the chuck looses its grip, All my other chucks are genuine Jacobs ,and they are reliable, the 0 to 1/2 inch Jacobs on my Fobco and S7 are just over 50 years old and still in excellent order.Nowadays I use ER collets for tapping,

                          Hi Jeremy

I Have Old ML10 to and have used all kinds of random make Chucks all with no real issues, it's really your cost and requirements.

I now have a small micro 0-3mm chuck from (Arceuro) for fine work, a 1.5-10mm from (second hand) for assorted uses, a 3-16mm (Jacobs secondhand) for the bigger drill/mills and a 3-20mm from (second hand) for large hole which i've found invaluable for use with holding Rota Brooch cutters for up to 70mm hole cutters for bigger bore projects where the brooches leave a valuable reusable core piece for other projects.

all of these are MT2 to suit both tail and head stocks which also match my Drill Press and small milling machine,

the advantage of a selection is that you can leave tooling chucked for multi manufacture parts so you can swap the chuck rather than the tool each repeat.

It never occurred to me that Rotabroaches could be held in a conventional chuck; mine are used with cheap shop-made holders.
