I replace my BV20 1/2HP single phase motor with a bigger (1HP) VFD setup and am generally very pleased. However, I think for the uninitiated, a word of caution.
If you haven't used one before, do realise that they will not fully replace the need for gears / pulleys. I'll admit that when looking into them at first I did get the feeling (perhaps rather naively) that I would fit this and simply just twiddle the speed knob to get what I needed – yes up to a point, but soon realised (after stalling numerous times) that speed & torque need more consideration. It took me some time to get the correct setup acceptable – and so now I still have to change change drive gears and the VFD provides a good variable range of speed from 0 to the normal fixed speed provided by the gear. So like much in life, their is no universal panacea – however, overall a worthwhile upgrade that offers more flexibilty.
