Can any one help me to repair/make a new quill spline drive as you can see from the photo damage to the splines look to me to be unrepeatable. We have a dividing head, but as yet Al and I have never used one, also we need to know what type of gear cutter we need. Shaft OD 16mm number of teeth on the spline is 14. Take in accout this is a German mill, metric I think. Any advice on steel to use? (Hard or soft) soft I think" as if this problem occurs again it will damage this part & not the quill. We" that is Al204 and myself will post photo of our final effort with your help & experience it will be possible to do. I would like to say I have only just bought the mill today, & so far very much I love with it. Or should I say impressed. Thanks in advance. Rob.

Hi Rob,

Can you clarify, is this a spline that slides inside a matching sleeve, or a gear that moves the quil up and down. If the latter it would appear to be a normal 1-mod 14-tooth gear for which you need a 1-mod number 7 cutter – probably 20 degree pressure angle, but I'd find a way of checking this first (e.g. seeing if a standard 1-mod 20-degree pa gear mates with the intact portion of thread.

If they are splines for something sliding up and down on them, it looks like spline cutters are numbered in the opposite direction. and a 1-mod number 2 cutter would be needed – but please check this with a 'spline expert'.

Just fyi, Stub: This is the axle for moving the quill of the FP1 up and down (like on a drill press).

The 'splines' mate with a rack cut into the quill,

How someone could bring that axle into such a desolate state goes over my head…

Hi chaps I helped Rob get the miller in to his workshop, he was told that the miller has a power feed that moves the table up and down as well as left to right, he was told some one had the quill down and left the power feed going in the up travel and that that caused the damage you see, we will never know for sure i suppose, Hansrudolf is right on his description of the part,still not sure what we need Neil as we don't have any gear cutters at the moment to try for a fit.

Probably more of a gear than a spline, need close ups of the decent part but Neil is probably correct in that it's a 1MOD 14 tooth

If the damage was caused as in the description above it might be worth making it in a "standard steel" so that if it happens again the shaft remains sacrificial. It'll be easier to make that shaft than get a new quill.

There  are a lot of FP1 owners on PM who could probably give you the exact dimensions and spline type.

There are still some Deckel spares available new from people like Swiss Machines . Pot luck as to what's available on any day but worth a try .

Also at least worth asking Anglo Swiss . They are not dealers but have many sources for continental machine parts .

PS1: Search on ' Deckel FP1 spares ' will also produce several results .

PS2 : Any machine that's had a bang hard enough to strip those gears may have other damage and some loss of alignment – now's the time to check it all .

Another thing just struck me, "shear pin" do Deckel's not have a shear pin in the feed system ? it might be worth checking in case someone has replaced it with a too hard pin.

If it mates with a rack, it must be a gear. the 14 tooth, 16mm measurement is spot on for 1-mod. You can check with a 1-mod gear rather than a cutter.

If a tooth or two are removed from the very end of the rack, the gear will free-wheel if over-run, rather than self destruct – but you will lose a little travel.

On the other hand the teeth at the end of the rack may have been 'machined off' by the crash anyway…

this is a close up as requester by John, been trying to upload it all weekend from my iPhone just would not work, just done on the IPad, have not got an idea how? Thanks for all the post you are a truly amazing professional. Mike you say about owners of FP1 on PM? Not sure what you mean, I have an problem with the bed stuck in the full left x axis after the auto feed stopped the bed stuck? Got it in bits but the problem seems to be on the worm gear, half nut but how I get in there! Need help from someone who's knows inside that gearing.

The best source I have found for Deckel parts (I have an FP1 Active) is Franz Singer. He has a website and a German eBay store and is extremely helpful if you send him a message. Some of the parts are expensive, but they are all extremely high quality, as you would expect.

If you want general help and advice, then as Mike mentioned, head over to Practical Machinist. They have a Deckel section in their forum and it is highly active with some fantastic knowledge. The guys on there will be able to help you understand what to check and how to manage it. They have certainly helped me with the few issues I have had over the last couple of years.

There is also a chap (Wrench) on there who has a vast array of manuals available on a DVD, which he can send out to you, for a price. Apparently it contains almost all of the available materials on the Deckels and plenty for other machinery too.
