Forward reverse barrel switch

Can a forward reverse barrel switch be used on an induction single phase motor . The switch in question is the one in my albums.

Hello Sean, well it all depends on the contact arrangement within the barrel. with care it is possible to take a rotary switch to pieces and rearrange the contacts to form a forward/reverse with centre OFF. If you like a challenge. When I have done this in the passed, I did it inside a plastic bag, such when of those small spring fly off it didn't hit the workshop roof and get lost, but dropped to the bottom of the bag. Best if you form a truth table first, closed or open 0 1 for each pair of contacts, even then you might have to put in external links. Most the ones I've seen are for reversing a 3 phase motors and they haven't got sufficient terminals for single phase motor use. Even with a reversing switch your ought to have a proper motor starter with NO-Volt release and use it to stop and start the motor, not the forward and reversing switch.John

I used the switch on the old single phase motor that came with the lathe and it’s still wired to the old motor .

If it is working with one single pase motor then it will probably work with another one. You seem to expect solutions but are not prepared to give much information. You could have at least posted THE picture of the switch together with the manufacturer and model number.

Don't use it for the main on/off or the contacts will burn out, get adQAAOSw9r1WD9aK”> no volt release switch with emergency stop button.

There have been other threads on here about wiring up the motor to a reversing switch. If it hasn't been fiddled with the drum switch is probably set up suitably but knowing which contacts to use is the difficult part.

The motor you intend to use the switch with, are there seperate terminals for the start winding and run windings?

If the answer is yes, then the simplest way to having a bi-directional motor is to use a dpdt switch for the start winding….

If this is so, I'll sketch you a drawing in how to hook up said switch along with the nvr switch….

If the switch is the one (a Dewhurst) shown in your album "Getting to the bottom of thing.." then I wouldn't use it on our Christmas tree lights.

Its contacts and posts are burned beyond redemption. In the interests of safety, get a new one.

Re-using that switch is definitely not a good idea and would probably lead to injury……best place is the bin..

It is important to have an NVR ( Stop/Start ) switch which, in the event of a power cut, will disconnect the circuit and ensure that the machine will not restart when the power is restored ( and you are either far away or fiddling with your fingers in the works.) The reverse function I've yet to find a use for and you can safely put off purchase of that until you do have need of it.

Calm down Les ….

If you'd checked my albums you would've seen the switch in all it's glory …. I was on my phone at work when i posted this so i don't have the motor handy to take a photo of make and model ….Anyways for all the times I'll be needing reverse I'm not going to bother faffing about …. but if i change my mind I'll make sure of at LEAST posting some information of the motor and switch ….

In Les's defence, you stated that the switch was attached to the original motor, then asked if it would work with another motor without qualifying which motor you had in mind….hence my question on whether your 'new' motor has separate terms for Start and Run connections….

Getting upset doesnt really help….but information does…..
