Looking good Gray, will you use a valve seat cutter to true the surface when the seats are pressed in or just go straight to lapping to the valve?

Gray, thanks for your reply on the valve guides, I don't imagine the motor will do that many hours of running over a great number of years, in fact that it runs is good enough for a master piece like this, and a glass case for it to live in. Ian S C

I was just thinking, it's going to be something that should not be put on a shelf in the workshop, only to be bought out every now and then, but should be on display. The glass case idea was just to save dusting. Ian S C

is that what they call a 'glass case' model?

                          Gray.

I can't help with the size (about 2mm diameter from memory?), but if the Mamod drive spring isn't quite the right size, you might well be able to find something suitable from a lip-type oil seal. Garages tend to keep leftovers from gasket sets and they often have these seals in them.

The fan appears to be chain driven from the above picture, so what about a fusee chain for a clock or watch?

                            I measured one at 1.97mm or 0.0775".

I can send you one if you need it.

                              Hi Martin,

I appreciate your thoughts on the source of the spring driving band from old Oil seals, unfortunately on the original tractor the driving belt was a segmented type as it had to passed through two cast in apertures in the radiator assembly to get to the crankshaft pulley before being joined to go over the fan pulley.

As Mamod drive bands can be had in various lengths that can be cut and assembled in situ I thought these would be ideal, otherwise I would have to make a removable portion from the radiator assembly. I know I could have used a plastic cord, but the joins never come out to my expectations, where as the Mamod type just screw into each other.

                              Gray,

                              Hi Neil,

Many thanks for the information, I had a feeling it was 2 mm but I was not sure, I can obtain them locally as Forest Classics are just down the road. It was just that I wanted to get the design finished today if I could and now I can, thanks.

                              Gray,

                              Gray.

The reason I mentioned the garter springs from oil seals is that they join in exactly the same way as the Mamod springs, but come in various diameters, one of which I though may have been suitable if the width of the Mamod offering was not right for your application.

                              Martin.

That puts modern plastic fans to shame.
