      Brian,

The safety valve itself is on the outside of the boiler and if mounted on the top, is above the water line.

Don't worry about the sprung part that is actually inside the boiler as it will mostly be in the steam space, and will not affect the operation of the valve.

Only if you overfill the boiler, say, more than two thirds capacity, will there be a chance of the valve being able to pass high temperature hot water or 'Prime'.

After all, they used to give this type of boiler for kids to play with dont know

Okay, I understand now. I think it may be worth doing. I am still waiting for my step drills to arrive from China.

You mean lots of Dads bought one to play with and used the kids as an excuse. angel

If it weren't wet an miserable I might be tempted to give my traction engine a qick run. Instead I'm looking into the missing bits of an incomplete stationary one I bought two decades ago (for my nephew who is now married ).

Thanks for supplying the link earlier Jason, it looks quite cute.

I am back in Cairns now. The step drills arrived in my absence so the first job was to drill an 5/16 hole for the Mamod safety valve bushing ; the safety valve will also act as my filler plug when finished.

The step drill worked well ( thank you for the advice) however I did end up with a ''lip'' around the hole which extended 3mm down on the other side. It was a real pain to remove but it is all cleaned up now. I should have drilled from the inside to the outside of the boiler end cap as this would have made it easier to clean up.

Is there a trick to using step drills so I do not end up with this ''lip'' on the underside of the metal ? I have never used them before.

As its a step drill just turn it by hand or carefully with the drill from the other side and that will take the burr off

The deburring blades with handles make deburring easy. I am addicted to the cheap sets of four half way down here. or look out for the free mango handle and deburrer tip offer for ME subscriptions.

I'm liking this set from Tracy, a quick twirl of the CSK type one is ideal for deburring small holes and the little triangular scraper is good for getting them off cross holes drilled into a tube etc.
