I've made another plate for my NEMA 23 and mounted that in place of the smaller motor. This still seemed to be 'catching' a bit when moving (relatively) fast so I stripped the mill down again (which was kind of my plan, anyway).
Probably the most important thing I've found is that the gibs are bananas. Both curve out in the middle. The Y by 0.12 mm and the X by 0.32mm! The X also appears twisted. What is curious is that the X movement is much smoother than the Y movement even though there is more error on the Y.
I've had a bit of search and it appears that one can make gibs. However, I can also buy them from ARC for a couple of quid, so that will be my starting point!
I'll see if that improves matters and report back..
