      Hi all.

I have a newly acquired Boxford 280, in the ivory and yellow livery, as per the first image here:

      http://www.lathes.co.uk/boxfordmodern/

I'm trying to find out the paint spec/colour so I can do some tidying up of the paintwork.

Boxford can't tell me the paint code, apart from tell me it was a Trimite air drying acrylic.

Trimite can't identify it, nor can Paragon.

Anyone by chance happen to know what BS/RAL or whatever code the paint is?

      Thanks

I should add that Trimite will match it if I take a cabinet door off and send it to them, but that is my last resort approach!

Have you tried looking at BS /RAL,colour charts online? Should get you close maybe……

              .

Have Trimite not got a sales record of what they supply to Boxford. They may or may not reveal this information though.

                Thanks

Trimite sent me a BS/RAL high quality colour chart, trouble is there are about 20 whites that are close!

                  Thanks

Trimite have been very helpful, but didn't offer to check their sales records for a 1991 lathe paint!

Boxford still make the 280 and derivatives, but changed to a two tone blue livery a number of years ago.

I have an old ME10 (kit) that is an exciting beige that will really liven up the workshop laugh Some parts are grey underneath so I recon they had stock and the shop floor must have been thrilled when the marketing guys told them about the change. It predates John Major though.

I also have a Warco item that is not their usual green, supplier error, so I got a discount.

You could always go for the 'faded white look'……I'll get me coat…wink

                        Hi David,

I also have a white / yellow 280, but have also bough a Centec 2A which I am currently rebuilding. Did you ever find out what colour paint was used or a good match?

                        Many thanks

                        Rich

                          Hi

If you can't get a paint code car paint suppliers can match paints to a sample very closely, I got them to match and make up a synthetic enamel and they used a retarder in the mix so it could be brush painted, it lasted very well on a green Colchester ( this was before Paragon was available).

You need one of the older fashioned paint suppliers that are used to matching faded car paints, I believe the minimum is 1 litre. I did try Halfords colour match spray recently when I made a power feed for my mill, the result was laughable, and there are no refunds, despite the green paint being blue!

                          Dave

Hi, Brewers Paints are very good at colour matching if you can take a part to them if you have one in your area.

                            Regards Nick.

                              Hi.

I have had to match paints a couple of times and the more specialist paint suppliers now have a hand held device that can 'read' the colour and give you the shade and/or RAL number. It literally only takes a minute or two.

The first occasion I needed this service, I used one of the larger (but local) glazing companies. They often need to colour match paint to paint the reverse side of windows or glass splash backs. So that is another route to what you want.

I have no idea how these devices work, but I assume that you would have to get the painted sample as clean as you can before getting it scanned.

                              Hope this is useful. Alan.

or you could scan the dirty parts and then you don't have to clean the lathe and then also you don't have to paint everything.

                                ;O)

Does it make all that much difference what colour the lathe is ?One time,I think they were all painted black, matching was no problem !

If I paint the Centec the same colour as the Boxford then I only have to keep one colour for touching up wink

At the moment looks like it's going to be Aldi silver as I have just stripped the old beige off the head and found blue/grey underneath.

I found that Hammerite's Smoothrite was a reasonable enough match; the cream is quite close. The yellow isn't 100% but quite near enough. It's all a question of whether you just want to look at it, or actually use it to make things with… The amount of oil-staining on the chip tray on mine after a couple of years makes colour matching irrelevant. (Unless turning cast iron, I use a lot of lubricating oil on my lathes.)

Thanks, it was going to be for painting the Centec, but that is now being done in Aldi Silver as I have two cans sitting on the shelf. I will bear in mind for re painting the Boxford cabinet when I have to.
