If threads don't seal how do tapered threads work

        Hi Stan,

Ah yes, of course tapered threads! I am pretty sure we are talking about straight threads on boiler bushings and fittings. Of course, there may be some that are tapered, but, the majority are not. Tapered threads are of course specifically designed to screw tight into each other, even then, some sort of sealing compound is used.

Other places where there are in fact no "screwed fitting" would be at the regulator and at the inner dome bushing. These depend on sealing only by the circle of screws and the flatness of the fittings, and perhaps with the help of a gasket.

Hi all well thank you again I never tried to see if the mating surfaces sealed as GB Boilers had so hard problem trying to g them to seal did not want to take the chance of them leaking.

I used gasket paper on the joints on the flat surface used the copper silicone on both faces then used the bearing seal on the threaded part.

As a novice trying to learn from so many mistakes trying to avoid problems to save headaches later.

After stripping it down so many times because of the boiler leaks I have had many weeks of thinking and so many suggestions I have tried to work out what would be best for me.

I am just hoping I have gone down the right road as I have made all new fittings and pipes taking extra care to get as good as I could do.

Going to try fit the boiler Lagging and cover today and do some final checks before taking to club Sun to do final test see if all is ok.

Getting exited never thought I would get this far so soon as did 10 hours yesterday and about 4 wed

It would be real nice if I could put the boiler into the frames on Monday if all goes ok Sunday.

          Many thanks

          Ron

Getting worried it's all going to easy I know I have had to strip it down many times but it seems like clockwork to go together this time.

Keep wondering what will go wrong I hope I really are this lucky this time as I thought it would take about a month to get this far.

Well today is a good Day I fitted super heater then back head fittings only leak was very slight from gauge glass.

They took it up to 135 so now I can start to fit the boiler.

I just hope not too many more problems be nice if I can get it done for We'd so I can do the steam test.

Thank you all for the help getting here you have been a big help

                  Happy Easter

Hi Harry yes so many problems with new Boiler now hoping they are all behind me.

Just taking my time I fitted the Boiler today and piped up in the smoke box.

Tomorrow got to make the pipes for injector blower and whistle

Then fit ash Pan and the cab and dare I say put a fire in.

The first couple of times going to let it warm up very steady get it to about 30 let cool the relight give the new boiler time to harden and bed in.

Then try and see if it will raise steam if it does back to the club we'd and get steam tested fingers crossed but don't think it will be that simple bound to be a few more things to solve but feeling positive now it's got through pressure tests 3 last wed one today

                      regards Ron

                                        Ron,

You may find that the very top of the safety valve is shaped as a collar. On mine you need to undo this a little to allow the inner section to be adjusted with circlip pliers . A bit of a fiddle but at least the workshop mice can not adjust them when you are not looking .

Hi Brian i have managed to undo one by undoing the top first.

the second one just would not undo it just chewed up waiting for new one from Polly.

just hope when i get pressure up not to many more problems.

Well I have let myself down fitted new blower tube without silver soldering the one end. The tube screwed into one end fine then after fitting the other end on it just pushed the other end to screw further and never screwed into the T piece so when steamed water just came through the blower holes so no steam test. Just going to fit new pipe and fittings and this time pressure test it ??

Well still not steaming as yet but getting very close took loco to club and re plumbed the tender to loco for the first time. I tried to steam but one clack valve would not work and its new so i have ordered two more this time from polly at Notts. Hoping to steam her Sunday it went through another pressure test all was fine this time. I have also ordered a new no 3 injector as the one from Reeves 2000 playing up. hope by Sunday might be able to finally run it. Ron

Finally back together except for new clack valve coming tomorrow. Hoping it will steam OK Sunday.
