Axle box lubrication

I am building a 5 inch GWR SPEEDY by LBSC. Among various questions, how do you lubricate the axle boxes. The horns have lubrication holes and below these are the holes in the axle box itself, but when the side tanks are in position, it will not be possible to get to either oiling points. LBSC says “place scraps of felt in the axle box for lubrication” Still the same problem, how do you get oil onto them.

Any ideas ?

Maybe an oil pump can with a spout like a shepherd’s hook from below?

Or run some lines from the tops of the axlebox to an accessible oil box with lid beside your tank or bewteen the frames near the front.

On my Evening Star there is a hole drilled through the axle to a cross hole in the axle where it sits in the axle box. Grooves and other holes will let the oil move around.

The book suggest pumping thick oil through the hole which should be easily accessible from the side of the wheel.

To me this would have the effect of flushing the bearings and the axle box.

It just needs a pump with a cone that will go into the small hole.

Hi Robert,

Look at photos (or the real thing) and notice all the little yellow boxes, on fronts of tanks, GWR and on tops of splashers or on running board, other Rly. Cos. Brass boxes with a lid and say, 3 pipes leading to A-boxes. A wick was poked in the top of the pipe inside the oil box and other end laid in box to soak up oil. Hope this helps.
