I am in the process of installing an M-DRO setup onto my SIEG SX2.7 mill. I have managed to get the X axis on but am struggling a bit with the Y axis installation. Does anyone have any pics of their Y axis installation on an SX2.7

Have a fixed reader head or a fixed scale?

      Thanks

I mounted the scale on the base drilling and tapping a hole for each end (the only new holes made for the Y axis). Wedge shaped spacers make the scale vertical. A length of aluminium angle replaces the thin metal strip which fixes the Y axis bellows in place. One of the supplied agle plates carried the reader below the the scale.

            Hi Roger.

Im in exactly the same position at the moment, I should have the X axis completed tomorrow.

For the Y axis I think I’m going to have a fixed scale bolted to the base casting and make a custom bracket to allow the head to bolt into the holes already there on the table.
I’ve got the magnetic M-DRO kit.

Roger, Paul, I have added a 4 axis DRO to my SX2.7. Photos in my Album titled DRO. May not be the best way to accomplish the installation but it works for me. I've bought some Aluminium to tidy it up but not got around to it yet. Hope the pictures help.

                Hi Dave,

You have done what I was planning.

                Thanks for the photos.

                  Hi Paul

I have the magnetic version as well. I have not built up much metal stock yet so have sent off for some aluminium to play with. I would prefer a fixed head myself.

I was planning to post some pictures when done (if it’s a good enough job) as there are not many resources online about fitting this type of DRO.

I do have quite a bit of aluminium stock in the garage so will hopefully have something useable.

I am hoping to have some time tomorrow to finish the X axis and start the Y axis.

I used one of the supplied plates to support the reader head. This was then mounted on a piece of angle that fits to the existing swarf guard mounting holes. I will mount the Y axis this week.

I have some pics but dont know how to add them at the moment. once I find out how I will post them.

If it's of any help at all, fitting the Y scale to a Warco might have presented similar problems – draught on the base casting, lack of parallelism of casting sides to table axis, no machined reference surfaces etc..

Having spent a couple of fruitless hours offering things up and taking them down again, I finally used assorted M4 grub scews to make the brackets adjustable (see sketch below) – it allows one to set everything up perpendicular / parallel with straightedge, square and clock, and once the foundations are 'square' and solid then hanging the scale and head off them in the correct relationship can be done using standard 90 angles and flat stock..

                                Hi Roger.

After 3 weeks at sea I have finally had a chance to fit the Y axis DRO.

I opted for a fixed tape and moving read head.

I used the supplied bracket, then made another bracket to bolt to this, and then both bolt onto the table in the drilled and tapped holes already there.

The documentation which was supplied with the kit said the head would work with the tape up to 1 degree angle. This was the angle of the casting of the base, it works fine.

Anyway, hope you got yours installed.
