Over the weekend I've made couple of quick change clamps for our spot welder at work (for battery pack assembly). The existing setup requires swapping out electrodes by undoing too many screws, hope this QC idea works.

…and whilst looking for a couple of M8 washers in my Dad's old gear I came a cross an old magazine clipping of a large milling machine. – I was going to say "Something awesome arrived in the post today!" along with the photo below – Click to enlarge.

      Cheers,

Kendall and Gent, (the company who I think made that machine) still exists.smiley

A mate has been nagging me to make him a paperweight – a super sized air gun pellet, so I knocked this up this evening:

Nice! That will completely baffle the 'Antiques Roadshow' experts in the next century.

Strikes me it would be even more impressive if it looked as if it had been fired. If you have a mill it might not be too difficult to put fake rifling marks on the skirt.

It was a pig to hold, it took me long enough to get the chuck marks off the skirt, I should have just left them on!!

Re Andrew's photo of the Plano-mill. Several of these were used at BAC Weybridge to "Skin mill" the wing panels for VC-10, 1-11 etc. The panels were milled from planks of Al alloy about 2" thick to produce a flat panel with integral stringers milled into them. The final profile was made by bending the panel into shape and shot peening to stress relieve them.

This fitted straight on and was very happy with my clearance . I found a billet of aluminium and too a little off it . The lathe ran fine . I just need to find a top slide dial now

Where I was apprenticed, we had a large Kendal and Gent. We produced machines in various sizes. To give some idea, here is a herringbone or double helical gear being produced by a horizontal gear shaper with two cutting heads:

                            **LINK**

This gear has a gap, Sykes machines of this type could also cut a gear without a gap, making the gear stronger. This required shaper cutters ground in a way that each side of the tooth finished in the same plane.

Managed to bang out another component on the CNC machine. I'm getting quicker at this now but the human element still remains. Things started out well until a brainless idiot ran amok in the workshop, starting the program before I had checked the actual length of the stock against the modelled stock, the difference being about 3mm the wrong way. That cost me a(nother) cutter. However, once I'd corrected the stock model, things went well.

X axis bracket - bottom op

This is the "bottom" of the component. Next I'll flip the part over and hold it in some mating soft jaws. It's fairly simple to make them from the parametric CAD model in Fusion. I made up 2 sets of soft jaw blanks last night, so the next task is to machine a pair of them up to fit.

I tried this on an European visit **LINK**. It's very nice, quite deadly for numbing the senses and possibly useful as a biofuel or maybe a cutting fluid.

I tried to obtain some in Australia but was informed that it had a short shelf life so not imported. Fortunately our local brews are of decent quality. Current favourites come from Tasmania – It's all down to the beautiful water purity. The Taswegans even make award winning world class whisky **LINK**

Anyway – Drink in moderation and do not go near machinery if you have had more than a few.

As for workshop progress, my rotary fly-tying vice is near completion so expect photographs in the near future.

I don't drink a lot of beer or red wine because most of it, not all, soon gives me a headache. It's very unfair, a couple of mouthfuls is enough. Doesn't stop me trying a new one though, I shall look out for that EKU28.

Look closely enough and there isn't really a 'correct' spelling of Whisky/Whiskey. It's an abbreviation of whiskybae, itself an alternative spelling of usquebaugh. Both spellings are 'allowed'.

The original spirit was made in both Ireland and Scotland and to distinguish the two the trade decided to label it as 'Whisky' in Scotland and 'Whiskey' in Ireland. A marketing rather than a cultural difference, not a million miles in purpose from Pepsi Cola and Coca Cola. The spelling distinction sort of stuck as the drink caught on and got made in other countries. It's not very consistent though and you might argue that Bourbon Whiskey isn't a Whiskey at all.

                                                  Hmm.

I tried Eku one night in Brussels at about 2am. Despite having been in the next door American cocktail bar for the previous 6 or 7 hours (Conway's I think), the wallop at 18% proof was quite noticeable.

Personally, I didn't like the taste which I found a little forced and metallic. However, all credit for sticking in my mind – it's not every day you try the 'strongest beer in the world'!

Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel is a dark beer brewed in Bruges in Belgium. This is also 11%.

I seem to recall that Young's Special was only sold by the half too. IIRC, the OG was 1155, it was dark and very sickly, so it is doubtful anybody would be tempted to try to down a whole pint for fear of not keeping it down. I certainly wasn't.
