Regarding welding of shotgun barrels, I bought an American shotgun, 'Savage' comes to mind and the first time out the forend came off in my hand as i fired. Looking at it, the forend fixing lug had been welded onto the underside of the barrel and had failed! it was changed without question and I swopped it for a Simpson S/S of Suhl. a beautiful gun. Then like a fool swopped that for an Ithaca which was rubbish. My present gun is a Beretta O/U and is silver soldered barrels. Very reliable.

Which is why it was rusty and full of holes

It would have been OK except some sugar cane farmer left it sitting on the dirt floor of his open-sided tractor shed for about 20 years too long. Not a good look when you get more than 6 feet of rain a year.

Graham, it's the joint that you see on your gun that is now often laser welded so it does not show but there is insufficient strength for service so initially the new tubes are soldered or fixed with engineering adhesive into the reworked breech.

The only laser welding I have ever seen on European shotguns was used by Beretta to attach the barrel tubes to the chambers and lumps on their side-by-sides. I saw this operation on a visit to the factory about ten years ago. I now understand Beretta have abandoned the process, which suggests there was a weakness. Anyone know more?

Yesterday really not today. But sort of engineering based.

Decided to go for a few hours carp fishing. It's been a few years since I went so purchased some new line and came to wind in onto the spool.

My reel had gone defunct.! sad

              Investigation revealed this :-

So had to go and grab a new reel before I ventured forth onto my expedition.

                    Hi Nick,

If you decide make a new gear for your reel, it would be interesting to see how you tackle it. (if you feel like sharing the process).

image.jpg I've been fiddling with my newly acquired BSA again, changed the oil and thoroughly cleaned out the oil tank as there was a bit of oily sludge in the bottom. Sent a small camera into the engine internals where I could get it and it is as clean as a whistle.

So I popped it in the van and took it for an MOT, which it passed. Not bad for an old rattler bought from an Autojumble.

Oil pressure.…………………Wonders will never cease, an old BSA with some oil pressure. Running from cold it produced about 25 PSI on a slow chugging idle speed, with just over 40 PSI on a slightly faster idle. With about 3000 RPM it produced around 70 PSI.

A 1972 version of this engine I tested a few weeks ago gave 70 PSI at a slow idle speed, these have an uprated cast iron oil pump which is not so easily damaged or worn.Engine sump plate.

I also repaired one of the engine sump plate threads and replaced the 1/4 inch cap screws with studs and nuts. The studs have been made long to accommodate a new, thicker alloy sump plate I plan to machine from a billet of aluminium. This is a common area of damage and bodgery. I knew the home workshop would turn out to be useful for something.

If the pop-ups keep appearing and become too irritating, I can ask for them to be taken down. Bear in mind that the cookie that knows you are logged doesn't know if you are a subscriber or not.

I'd rather give it a few days because we all know that a batch of new subscribers is better for all in the long run.

See it as a punishment on those who are inflicting the fish-pun thread on the forum. It just isn't the plaice.

I can assure you the price of a new reel these days making a new gear is not worth the trouble. The original looks to have been a casting (see what I did there wink) and had no machine finishing. Looks to be made of 'Chinese cheese metal' The make is by Browning.

If anyone wants it for experimentation purposes or fancies making a new gear for it they are welcome to have it.!

Did some fettling of this mystery item from 1956. img_6195.jpg Very nicely made indeed. The brass spigot even had a screwdriver slot so when reasssembling it can be oriented correctly. A very heavily engineered item but functionally really nice, should give you a clue to the manufacturer. So what is it and what lathe did it come with?.

Got the parts for the Cricket Club mower (£15+VAT postage rip-off) only to hear the tractor wheel bearing has gone. Arranged to borrow a hi-lift jack for tomorrow but need a stand and the famous Fergie spanner (allegedly one spanner fits every nut).

On a better note I got some castings at the last club meeting and hear someone else was after them today – but I got in first he he!
