The motion of the universe and its contents seems to be regular and to have purpose which we as mere mortals can use profitably, on the other hand however the movement of politicians while constant seems to follow no logic or purpose being mainly random and chaotic by nature affording little benefit to us mortals wink 2.

      Cheers

Hi lads, thank you for your responses to my post. The Rosetta probe has been in space 10 years and only now is nearing the comet 67P/ C-G. It will stand off at a certain distance to carry out scientific measurements and take photos of the comet. later a topographical map will be worked on to configure a landing site.

I have been surprised at how little is being made of this in the media, almost silent and it is the ESA website that is giving snippets of information almost daily. They have claimed intellectual rights to the information even though it has been paid for by the EU and its peoples. One reason was that certain researchers and scientists were seizing on the info. put out and extrapolating it as if it were their own research!

This is a magnificent scientific achievement that has been 10 years in the making and some of the detail that will emerge will give some idea of how Comets formed when the alleged 'Big Bang' happened.

My posts were only to make you all aware of what was happening at this time and allow you to, how can I say, 'Join In'

          .

Isaac Newton was an early exponent of that research methodology.

Decided to fit a reversing camera to the Donald.

We have 230ft of frontage on out property but the guy across the road who has plenty of room insists on parking his car smack in the middle of our space and takes up 3 spaces.

Anyway he's been complaining that I keep backing into his car and breaking his number plate so decided to fit this reversing camera which I have had for about a year now.

Absolutely brilliant, as a trial I can reverse up to the forks on the fork truck to with 5mm with no problem.

Now perhaps I'll be able to get his expensive headlight which is what I have always been aiming for instead of a cheap number plate.

So, the "top hat" shaped piece goes into the pressure tube and just to make doubly sure it won't accidentally come free the securing ring is screwed down on top and acts as a locknut.
The moron who tried to service the valve gripped the cylinder with Mole Grips – plenty of evidence – and then tried to unscrew the top hat/valve assembly by gripping it with pliers. Without first removing the securing ring. This of course ensured the whole thing was immovable!

                scorpion-02.jpg

I really didn't want to use heat, for a couple of reasons, it would really destroy the finish and there was a risk of melting the O ring and really getting it stuck. I decided to give a Loctite product I had seen a go. Loctite 8040 Feeze and release.

Now, I don't know whether or not this was responsible for the total success of the removal, or whether it was a combination of all of the techniques I used but I can say, as the components began to warm up they became harder to remove and I had to resort to a bit of brute force. Now they are on the bench though it is an easy matter to check everything over before re-assembly.

I know I seem to be posting mostly woodwork its what I mainly do and until I complete a few projects I can only sneak time doing metal work between it will happen believe me.

LOML is well into fibre crafts spinning, weaving, felting, knitting and much more.
So if I get asked to make what is required I say how soon thinkingdont know and recalculate how soon I get to do metal work again and other projects.

The quick job, 4 days worth from start to finish cutting the Oregon, dressing it or I should say facing it off on the wood lathe. Gluing the 3 pieces together drying time 24hrs or 2 days turning the final shape today. It has sanding sealer on here yet to be Lacquered with about 5 coats to seal it well as it will get very wet.
She will also cover it with cling film when doing the felting.

So where's the rest of the set. People don't all have the same size head you know. Though interestingly my father's hats fit me perfectly.

Well actually, what you do is saw it in half and add a screw mechanism making it contract and expand. Works to a certain size then you need another. People mistakenly think they are "hat stretchers" but in fact it is a way of having a block for various sized heads.

My mother (84 years young) is having me make some more special tooling for her this week so she can properly form some silk flowers she is doing for one of her hats. She took up millinery in her sixties and I must say, though they don't exactly appeal to me personally (?) she has produced some spectacular and very tasteful designs.

Working in Europe in the early seventies I took to wearing a "Prinz Heinrich" cap and wore this for twenty odd years around the world. Just recently I have taken to wearing a flat cap and on Saturday one of the chaps down Coventry said I looked like Fred Dibnah. I didn't know whether or not to take that as a compliment or an insult. I do like cake though

                            Hi

Very interesting hat posts, It's amazing the very diverse things you can learn on this forum.

I've only ever worn a woolly pompom hat. Soon I hope to be steaming my 3" scale Allchin traction engine, so that may be time for a suitable hat or cap.

The 1-1/2" scale drawing show a dummy displacement lubricator, for my 3" scale I decided to make a working version. Finished it over the weekend, here's the parts and the finished item fitted to the engine. Turned out quite well I think.

Sue was given a smaller Hat Block last week this one is for her sized head. I did ask today should I make one larger my size…………her reply "Not enough wood" (j).

I recall as a kid seeing adjustable hat blocks I am sure in Millenary depts of stores and yes people bought them as hat stretchers the Aussie sun shrinks them over time.

My Akubra as well as Sue's have shrunk by 1/4" & 1/2 respectfully. Mine I wet and stuck a soccer ball inside and pumped it up had to slice the leather inner band tho to allow it to re-shape a little.

It would be interesting to make one adjustable.

                              Link

Sue has used balls in the past (not mine) to make hats of various sizes but as they get slippery while working the soap into them they get harder to handle……….wink 2

The Akubra is worn in summer wide brim, peak cap usually to keep sun out of eyes or my Andy Cap type in winter to keep head warm or a beanie.

Edited:- The hat blocks can be instantly resized by adding either bandage or foam or other layers of material.

This sort of stuff does fade in the public eye quite rapidly these days. I mean, Rosetta was news 3 years before the first iPhone, and Apple have produced a new generation of it every year since then.

Found these but not in the order they were photographed, First 4 are bronze, rest iron.

                                                Hi John,

I recognise those, especially the steel Sweet Pea boiler. They're from a deceist model engineers workshop that I helped clear a year or two back. The widow got in touch with someone I know and asked if we could help. If I had known she was just going to scrap everything that was left I would have made an offer for them sad There was a load of laser cut frames as well. I spent hours sorting all the castings out and putting them in separate boxes!

I bet she got bugger all for them as well.

That's where my Boxford shaper came from.

After a good day at Kingsbury Bobs steamer doing it's fastest speed 123.33mph and my new machine now on form 128.87mph plus an experiment that had a dodgy result but opens another door to extra mph.

Stripping the engine the results was first class apart from a some bearing housing clearance getting excessive.

Have to repair some fire damage after the experimental run.

The new head is getting very hot but working well no leaks compared to the 2013 head.

A few meetings next month to get that extra mph.

The corks were often thought to be used to keep the flies and mozzies away. In fact it was so they new how many bottles they had open at one time.

Being new bloke here I'll leave my snide outlandish comments re-Neil's new style hats. Hope you fellows local have fun kissing his……………….. holliness.devil
