      Hi all,

I am wanting to do a bit of light milling on my Drummond M treadle lathe (stop laughing!). I have done some small bits by holding them in the tool holder, but now I am need to work on some slightly larger pieces and I could do with a vertical slide.

Drummond M ones seem to be pretty rare, there were a couple on eBay a while back which I missed. Does anyone know if a Myford 7 slide can be adapted? Obviously they are pretty easy to get hold of (although quite pricey). Or another solution? Or perhaps you have Drummond one gathering dust!

      All and any thoughts appreciated.

      James

Yes, ML7 type vertical slide in use daily on my M-type. Bolts straight on. Get the little vice to go with it.

I would advise buying the non-swivelling type if you can. I am pretty unimpressed with the lack of rigidity and the tendency to move under heavy milling loads of my ML7-type double swivel vertical slide. You almost never will need to use the swivelling facility, and if you do, the fixed type slide can be pivoted about one mounting bolt and a base clamp used as on faceplates etc if needed.

I'm currently making a reinforcing piece, well getting ready to, for my swiveling slide, will share details when it's done.

And nobodies laughing, some may have a problem with treadle power and rust hips and knees, but if nothing else foot power teaches the opperator to use sharp tools, and to think of design(you don't do things twice, and you use the right size to start with).

Hi both, thanks for your replies. Really helpful info on the swivelling type, as that would have been my natural inclination. To be honest the feedback from the Drummond Group was that an angle plate, if you can secure the work, is almost better. But the lathe is also going to be my pillar drill for a while and I guess it's much easier to move things into place accurately with the vertical movement.

I'll have to wait for an old Myford one to come up as auction on ebay – the nearly new buy it now ones are quite pricey.

I think I paid about 75 quid for my swiveling slide two or three years ago on eBay UK. The good deals are there if you bide your time.

Check Warco – saw one at the midlands show today and it seemed fairly solid.

A fixed slide sold tonight on ebay for £70 – only one bid – was that you James?

I was looking at this one: **LINK**

But to be honest they seem to go for about half that when they are auction, rather than Buy-It-Now so I might bide my time (or send the seller a message after the auction and see if they fancy a direct sale).
