Many of the problems I have with Windows is that even if I have administrator rights, I am not allowed to do a lot of things on my own computers. Anybody else on the whole internet seems to have every right to my computers.

The following commands let me at least activate/deactivate the hidden REAL administrator. Strangely enough there is no password involved. Use with causion!

      start c:Windowssystem32cmd with administrator rights
      net user administrator /active:yes

Now you can switch user to the real administrator!

You should probably deactivate it afterwords with:
      net user administrator /active:no

      Hope that helps some.

      Kai

          Hi all

Jason, I'm afraid there is no webmaster or mistress to reply. I have just happened to log on and see this post just now. I haven't got windows 8, so I can't answer David's question, but I will ask someone else to look at it for him tomorrow.

Please can I politely reiterate to everyone that I am a part time developer for all the myTimemedia community (that's magazines to you and me) and the part time web editor for Popular Patchwork. That means I do read every post on PP, but I can't read every post on all 20 websites. If there is a problem, I really need someone to email me to let me know, so that I can investigate. I have only spotted this by chance, and I can't spent every Sunday evening trawling through every forum looking for problems. You are all welcome to email me at katy.purvis@mytimemedia.com with any issues, and I will do my utmost to fix most things but I cannot offer 24/7 support. I am really not trying to be awkward, I do want to help, but I am not omniscient.

In his second post David stated :

            > Completly knackers all websites.

Which suggests it may be a problem with how the high-contrast theme deals with complex colour patterns, not this website in particular.

Ah..I guess that means he ( David) did.. and I missed it…

All the Windows problems that are appearing is making me feel nostalgic

After coming out of hospital January 2007 and back into what I can only describe as Windows XP grief, I took the plunge and bought an iPod.

Well what can I say, except that the 'halo' effect proved to be true, as a couple of months later, after I had recovered enough from the op, I decided life was just too frigging short and bought a MacBook, and soon afterwards a MacPro, after the revelation of OS X compared with Windows.

To use a system that is rock solid is a pleasure, and NO I'm not a 'fanboy', I just appreciate something that 'just works' as intended.

I do have the Pro dual boot with Vista to run Serif software, but that is a pain, even on that superheated machine.

Would not now voluntarily go back to MS, and in fact, I have both XP and Win2000 laptops I haven't booted up in about 4 years. I just dread the grief I know I'll get from Windows.

As you can surmise, my experience of Windows has not been trouble free.

I so pity new businesses having to get new computers with W8 on them!

Try installing your Windows OS in VirtualBox. It's much more convenient than dual booting. Alternatively try running your Windows programs using Wine.

There must be better forums to discuss these problems, this is a ME forum not a computer software forum.

It's only a forum [of any persuasion] if the computers are working !!

Bob..open a can of custard and get baked beans. ..grounds for grumble. ..open beans and get beans …well what was expected? …
The thread title is computer oriented so if it doesn’t interest easily avoided..that said..I like topics to “do what it says on the tin”.

At the risk of grumbles from certain posters accusing me of being of topic I humbly apologise in advance (like hell !)

I have a late model HP Envy 23 PC which came with Windows 8 pre-installed and which I was using up to about three weeks ago. The only problem I had with posting on this site is that my text will not justify properly and the pics won't go where I put them. But never mind, I can live with that.

So three weeks ago I upgraded to 8.1 and all went well for two weeks then suddenly the machine would not come out of the post screen and windows would not boot. Nothing I could do would resurrect the beast and after two days of trying I bit the bullet and factory restored losing a small part of my life in the process. My backup DVD set would not work either.

It's swings and roundabouts though as with a new slim and sleek machine it runs Google Earth at warp speed whereas three weeks ago Google Earth was so slow it was unusable.

Having "googled" other peoples problems with 8.1 I have come to the conclusion that my machine stopped working because some of my 8.0 drivers were incompatible with the new upgrade. I will never know for sure though as I am more likely to turn down a win on EuroMillions than contaminate my machine with the cursed 8.1 again – may it be consigned to digital purgatory!

                            Russell,

I have tried both, but with little success.

The Gods are telling me something I think, along the lines of "Do you really really want that grief back in your life?"

Cannot remember the last time I booted up Vista, as I've found Apple software quite adequate for my needs now, as I'm no longer involved in the design of websites/newsletters, thank goodness.
