I have noticed a few Stuart number 9 engines fitted with a governer that were obviously not standard Stuart governers and look to be made from stock materials was there ever an article in Model Engineer or drawings available to make these ? David

Stuarts do/did a different Governor for teh No 9, its not the same as that on the beam, victoria, James Coombes, etc. partly due to the fact that the base casting also acts as the valve rod guide.

Though there may have been another design in Tubal Cain’s book on building teh No 9

            David,

If it’s of use to you I have drawn up plans for the governor in this picture. the balls are about 10mm or 3/8″ diameter.

The Stuart Governor kit I bought a while back covers the Victoria, Coombes, Beam and No.9 Engines. I think there is only one governor kit in the range now.

Here is a picture of what’s in the Stuart kit

And here is a trial fit from my blog:

Yes thats why I wrote do/did, I first looked on their site and only saw one set of parts listed but looking in my printed catalogue which by the price list was about 1989 it lists a different kit for the number 9.

Best hope would be that its shown in the book and you can use that as a guide, should not be too hard to fabricate the base casting and it will look more in proportion to the other design.

Stew Hall will be detailing a nice governor for his overcrank that could be adapted.
