        Evening all

I have been looking at replacing my 3 jaw chuck of dubious quality with a 6 jaw after watching a few you tube videos.

Has anyone any experience of the Sanou make as regards quality or the 6 jaw chuck. Am I wasting my money and should stick with my 4 jaw or 3 jaw with all sections turned at one setting.

The videos I have seen show repeatable accuracy with the 6 jaw but not necessarily the same make of chuck.

It is for a Harrison M300

        Any advice greatly appreciated,

        Dave

          Hi Dave

I have always understood that 6 jaw chucks are specialist , and rather delicate, equipment intended for light work on round things that are thin and would be easily distorted by the 3 point pressure of a 3 jaw chuck. Eg the bezel of a clock. They are not, I think, intended as a general purpose replacement for a 3 or 4 jaw chuck.

So a lot depends on what kind of work you are intending to do.

As with everything you get what you pay for, a good Pratt or Bison 3-jaw is likely to out perform a Sanou though they are a reasonable quality Chinese brand. My Bison is good for less than 1/2 a thou runout.

A 3 or 6 jaw self centering chuck is not by definition a 'precision' work holding device, the same as a drill chuck isn't a precision tool holder, you might get a good one which runs spot but most will not & are not likely too.

It is always good practice to perform as many turning ops in one go.

I have a Pratt Burnerd 6 jaw, which I use infrequently on my Myford. It seems to be a bit of a specialist chuck, Ideal for turning thin sections without too much distortion.

Mine came with (I think) 6 sets of jaws. The usual inside, outside and soft jaws.Plus other sets that baffle me, one has slender triangles radiating from the outside of the jaws. I can't quite visualise the others as they never get taken out of the storage box..

I was given the chuck in an unused condition, I would never spend that sort of money for such a thing. Much better to buy a decent 3 jaw, Bison and TOS (if they are still in business) would get my money anytime.

                Andrew.

                  Thanks guys.

Kind of what I was thinking but good to have a second opinion from wiser folk.

I'll save my pennies for other things.

                  many thanks

As already said, they are rather specialised, and are good at holding easily distorted work. There is a variation with thin jaws which is for holding twist drills while they are being sharpened, as they are much less likely to bend the drill while holding them securely. The Sonou chucks only have one set of jaws which is a disadvantage, you might just as well buy a three jaw one and a set of soft jaws, more useful generally.
