I am trying to get a replacement nut for a J731MT2 collet set. The original nut is missing and the one in the box is an ER nut which is not compatible although it screws on it doesn’t clamp collet properly. The set thread is 32.5 diameter and 1.5 pitch and has never been used and still in original box just no nut. I have done a few searches on the web with only complete sets but no nuts available. If anyone could suggest where one could be acquired from I would be most appreciated.

I suspect the J731MT2 is the part number of the set and does not give any information about the actual collets. Posting a few photos may help.

An ER25 collet nut is 32 x 1.5 mm thread, so undersize and not really compatible with your holder, and the collet holding / release system will probably differ anyway.

You might need to make your own, if you cannot find one

Are you sure it’s not an ER25 set? The collets need to be clicked into the nut before screwing on as seen here. If they are not, then the collet will not tighten up. As Martin wrote, a picture of a collet and the holder might help.

Could it be one of the Far eastern ERalike collet sets that were about around 20yrs ago. Thread measures 32.7mm so possibly a slack M33. Post a photo and also compare the collets to these measurements

                See this old eBay description.

That number featured on an ER 25 collet block set.

If that is the case then a standard ER25 should fit. It does on mine but threads measure 31.8 for M32.

Measuring what you have might be the only sure way of identifying that what you have isn’t one of those Asian versions of the ER collets that don’t match to the proper ER series of chuck threads and nuts. Here’s the dimensions of what they should be if they are in fact ER collets. https://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Collets/ER-Collets

When I bought an XJ12-300 mini mill from Amadeal way back in the 2000’s, I also purchased a number of other accessories at the same time as we were living in France at the time and I picked up the mill and bits from Amadeal while on a visit to the UK.  One of the extras was a collet set with seven collets.  Not knowing any better at the time, I assumed that they were ER25 collets, but they turned out to be close but not quite.  I sold them on with the mill when I returned to the UKin 2015, but I’ve just dug out an old photo from one of my old albums on the old forum and they look remarkably similar to the set currently offered by Amadeal on their web site, HERE.

It looks to me as if the taper of the collet is less that that of an ER25 set, though that may be the perspective of the photo.  It’s possible that David’s set is one of these.  Maybe a ‘phone call to Amadeal could elicit confirmation, one way or another.

That is the same as the type I put up the measurements of a few posts above, my set came with my X3 from Engineers Toolroom.

That seems to confirm what I surmised, then, Jason.  The ER25 collets have a taper twice that of the looky-likey ones and are somewhat shorter.  Consequently, neither are compatible with the other.  Time to be spending some more of your pension, methinks, David.

The money has long since been spent, they hardly get use dthese days as the ER32 infront see all the action. Also some ER25 and 16 stored elsewhere.

Took a photo of one of these collets up against an ER25 so you can see the differences, holder on right.
