In the early 50s (might be late 40s) Lawrence H. Sparey wrote an article for building a QC gearbox to fit the Myford ML-7 which was published in The Model Maker, a British magazine competing with ME in the early post-war years. This was before Myford introduced their own design. Since 1991 several gearbox articles have been written based on the original Sparey design to fit the 7-Series and 10-Series Myfords.

I have the original Sparey drawings which were (are?) available from ME as MM-173, but I don't have the construction article. Does anybody reading this have access to the original MM issues with the construction aricle? If so, would you please contact me at:

          Anthony,

Believe this gearbox may be similar to the kit version currently supplied by Hemmingway **LINK** for which they supply drawings and construction notes. Once on home page go to , Toolroom , Machine Tools , Myford Specific , Screwcutting Gearbox , Machin.

In addition, know this is a long shot, but in the past MHS ( MyHobbystore ) have supplied me with scanned information from an early Model Maker. Perhaps they would be able to help with this problem ?

Hope you will find the above of use.

            Trevor,

Thanks for the leads, I'm aware of the MAchin articles and the kit available from Hemingway. I probably can get the original articles in ME starting in 1991. As I'm certain you know, there was also an article in ME starting in 1996 on a version for the Myford 10-Series lathes, also available from Hemingway and for which I can probably get access to the original articles. Besides the ones for Myford lathes I also know of articles to build QC gearboxes for Atlas 10" and 6" lathes. Currently trying to accumulate information on all of these.

I will continue to look for the original Sparey articles and I appreciate the suggestion to contact MyHobbystore for the possibility of scans of the Model Maker issues. Your other information is also appreciated.

            Thank you.

            Anthony

              Anthony,

Bit ironic but found the early hemingway owned drawings and build notes on Friday when i was attacking yet another cupboard.

Other that a quick glance to see what drawing they were, I didn't peruse them any further so not sure what's there.

New information, a person who has all the issues of The Model Maker, minus issue #2, has checked for the Sparey article and says it's not there. He also suggested that it might have been published in Model Mechanic, which he says was the predecessor to The Model Maker..

Anybody have Model Mechanic issues which they could check to see if the Sparey gearbox article is therein? Model Maker issue #1 is Dec. 1951 so the Model Mechanic would be prior to that date.

Thanks again for feed back, here and direct to me.

                Anthony

It's Model Mechanic March & April 1950 that you are after.

I have PDF's of both Sparey gearbox articles from the above months.

Paul was generous and sent me the information I needed to complete my research. A very great thank you to him and to each of you who responded with assistance or offers thereof.

It occurs to me that, having had some difficulty in finding out the correct information as to where the original Sparey article was published, it would be helpful to others to post the correct information.

Model Mechanic March 1950 Part 1, Cover photo plus 6 pages, 142 thru 147 and page 155.

                          Model Mechanic April 1950 Part 2, 6 pages, 165 thru 169 and page 182.

It also appears that Lawrence H. Sparey was the Editor of Model Mechanic

This tribute page might help sort out the confusion of magazine titles.

There was also a two-part article "Building a Screwcutting Gearbox for a Myford Super 7 Lathe" by Alex Payne in Model Engineers' Workshop # 165 (July 2010) and #166 (Aug 2010).

While this is for a Super 7, not an ML7 (I admit that I do not know the differences), this consrruction article also made use of Hemingway castings and drawings. Perhaps there is some useful info for you..
