I am after a better quality drill chuck for my bench drill. It was suggested on this site when I first bought the machine that I should look at buying a better quality drill chuck. Today I was told by Allied Bearings that the B16 taper is an old taper and no longer used much. Is that true ?

      Can anybody recommend a good quality drill chuck : 1.5 to 13mm B16 ?

Brian any number of chucks with a B16 taper are available from the tool suppliers we generally use. An internet search will throw up a selection. I take it that your drilling machine is quite substantial as most chucks with this mounting are of the 3 13 mm capacity They are also generally of the keyless type, these are longer in the body so reduce the distance between the chuck and the table by approx 50mm over a keyed chuck of this size..

            A sidenote to this post.

I got a supercheap one from a well known auction site and the quality was amazing, 12quid at the time, now a tenner and was gobsmacked at how nice it was to use (way better than the first one I got)

Very handy as an emergency spare or for upgrading a smaller weedier or older drill chuck. item 351718624293 (diamond brand)

My Chinese drilling machine also has a taper, and the chuck has now giving up. All of my stock of Jacobs chucks have threaded, straight throats….so a careful set up to machine a taper in one is now called for……just need to time to get down to it between all the other jobs.

Jacobs chucks in the large/medium size are easily available for not very much at carboots and on ebay etc……they usually go for about £5……..roughly the same as for a NEW Chinese chuck, which are rubbish, by the way! My Chinese drilling mach. was a fantasic buy from Aldi annd cost £32 (3 pulley multispeed 16mmcapacity700watts) I was told at the time that I had wasted my money but for general (and some accurate stuff too) drilling it has been excellent for the last 5 years!….so, although the chuck has given up now it does not owe me much if anything!…….Only one minor modification has been neccessary(no lube/bearing in idler pulley)

B16 is a German taper standard as opposed to Jacobs JT1 JT6 etc

There are lots of B16 mount chuks Rohm are good Albrecht are amongst the best and will cost more than a Chinese drill press.

For model engineer pricing try Arc or Chronos hearhc chuck B16 in there websites.

B tapers are a DIN standard and more recent than the Jacob's tapers.

B16 is the small end of an MT2 taper.

Neil, that is what I thought but I didn't want to argue with him.

I do not want to buy any generic brand. I have been using generic brands of T handle tap wrenches for many months which did the job…or so I thought. Today I have bought good quality Sutton T handle tap wrenches ; the difference is chalk and cheese. The odd thing is that the Sutton brand do not cost any more then the generic brand.

So before I buy just any brand of drill chuck I thought I would ask around. A lot of my drilling is between 1.5 to 3mm and the cheaper quality chucks seem to have problems accurately gripping smaller drill bits.

                      Brian.

Arc Eurotrade sell a 1.5 -13mm drill chuck with a B16 taper part number 040-010-00320.

I have always found Arc to sell very good quality gear even though it comes from China. If you were to have any problems they will sort things out immediately as they are a first class supplier. I have no connection with Arc other than as a frequent and satisfied customer.

I purchased a Keyless Drill Chuck from Arc Euro a few months ago and I was very pleased with it. The runout was far less than the cheap chuck that came with my Mill. They also stock B16 arbours for the keyless drill chucks.

If your machine accepts Morse taper shank tools It is better to buy a new arbor to fit the chuck you want rather than accept a questionable chuck just because it has a B16 taper.
