Myford Lubrication

I took the apron apart on my Myford Super 7 and found it is full of grease. I think the manual suggests oil lubrication. Is grease used anywhere on a Myford?

And how do I fill an oil gun? Do I extend it fully then fill it to the brim with oil? (that is going to take a lot of oil

In a nutshell, no grease!! You can out as little or as much oil in the gun as you want to, its up to you , half full?

I too was surprised to find grease in apron, gearbox, and pumped through many oil nipples all over the machine! My process was to clear out physically where possible and blast with copious amounts of wd40 under pressure from spray can (use those cans with integral straw/tube). Then when satisfied , pump with Nuto (gears take sae 30 motor oil)…Adam

Before you fill or even half fill an oil gun, make sure it does not leak or you might find you lose the lot (all over where it's put down)!

Sorry if you already know that but it happened to me with a new oil gun a while ago.

while I'm asking questions… I'm a bit worried about the front headstock lubrication. The cup was empty. I took the cup off and poked a stick down the hole – a bit of gunge on the edges but I don't think there was a blockage. After replacing cup and filling, it doesn't go down.

Now I've found grease where is isn't supposed to be, I'm thinking how do I KNOW that the headstock wick isn't plugged with grease. I hope for an answer that doesn't involve taking the headstock off.

Never again… what a mess after a month or two…

As recommended above, only use oil

Try running it for a while with no load, I get a ring of oil visible on the bearing at the front of the headstock and the oil will eventually go out of the cup, it's called a total loss system.

If you are worried re headstock. You can stick the nozzle of the oil gun into the oil cup and pump. If you do this enough you should see oil issuing from the front bearing after a short time. This is a Myford trick and it is a quick way to ensure lubrication is getting where it should be.

The best way to ensure the headstock is well lubricated is to replace the old oil cups with glass drip feed oilers.

And remember, oil leaks out of a Myford from everywhere!
