I need to hold a short ring shaped object on the lathe. It is around 4mm long and both sides need to be faced and chamfered internally and externally.

Whats the best was to hold this, my three jaw doesn't really hold it well enough.

Make yourself a set of soft jaws, drill pilot hole, bore to suit ring diameter, voila!

Soft jaws. See MEW issue 52.

You could try making a Pot Chuck **LINK** I recently made one for a 3/4 OD x 1/8 cylinder end cover which needed a boss on one face and recess on the other.

Is that 4mm before or after refacing? What diameter?

A thought from a newbie: How about boring a centre hole out of a length of scrap ally, popping 2-3 1.5mm setcrews around the diameter to hold the work in there while you face and internally chamfer then drill a threaded hole inside the bar, to fix a truncated cone to clamp onto the internal chamfers and chamfer the outsides? Set screws will be reduncdant now and you can chamfer the fixture away.

Hello all, if you have a lathe that takes 5c collets, you could use one these, a Master Expanding collet. One came with my lathe, but have never used it !.

Some of these methods look pretty good to me but as a newbie I've also read all sorts of stuff about balancing the compression on the chuck jaws along their length to prevent bell-mouthing.

Is my information out of date or am I just fussing unnecessarily?

not good with comps so prob just missed it.

seen few posts listing specific issue and thought that might be worth read.

MHS may well have back issues.

You may find the pages on my website about using soft jaw helpful. However, it would be nice to know how big (internal and external diameters) the ring is to see if it is a practical method.

The OP says "both sides need to be faced and chamfered internally and externally." That presumably requires both internal and external work holding.

I imagined soft jaws to do the facing, boring and internal chamfering, followed by an expanding arbor to complete the external chamfering (and turn the outside surface, presumably).

If its 4mm thick you can have a 2mm recess in the softjaws which would be ample to put a small chamfer on the OD as well as bore and chamfer the ID all in one go

For future reference, there are plenty of MEW indexes (indices?) out here, just google for them.

I got lambasted laugh for not buying issue 52 currently on sale in W H Smith, this turned out to be incorrect as there are nearly 200 issues since issue 52 and I didnt start getting MEW until around issue 200 so can I expect an apology laughlaughlaugh
