        Good morning all,

I am looking for information please on South Bend lathes equipped with gearboxes to see if it is possible to expand on the concept of simpler gearing.conversion to other 'languages'

I would greatly appreciate help with both models of g'box, especially the Metric version

A photo of the front controls showing the chart and a simple description of the outside gearing set up [spindle to gearbox input] would also be welcome. What leadscrew pitch was standard for a metric model?

        Many thanks in advance

Brian     my email address is wood_y@btinternet.com

          Hi Brian

Have you tried searching the net, click the following link to search for South Bend eBook.
          **LINK**

Very popular in the US the practical machinists site would be a good place to search.

          **LINK**

          Regards
          John

            Hello John,

Thank you for the links, I have actually joined the Yahoo user group and posted my questions there as well, One drawback to loining that group seems to be in receiving the previous large number of exchanges on any SB lathe related topic or observation; never have I had so much email to plough through!

However, if I get the information I am looking for I can always de-list and vanish back into the background. There are many clones as well, notably Boxford, that might be more fruitful avenues of exploration.

            Kind regards

            Brian

On the yahoo groups don't enable the email notification unless you have no social life and want mails. You can go to the group front page and progressively scroll through all the posts you want, or do a search. You will probably find in their photos sections all the pictures you want, and in the files sections lots of raw data and manuals.

Are you looking to calculate the options for using the gearbox plus minimal other changes to the gear train to cut additional threads similar to the recent article in MEW and postings on here for the Myford?

                Hello Bazyle,

Yes indeed, that is the information I am after.

Thanks for the advise on Yahoo group management I didn't enable the email notification fearing that would be like opening the door.

                Regards Brian

Brian, I have taken the blinkered approach of not offering any Boxford information in case it is not exactly the same as you specified SB but can if you need it.

                    Hello Bazyle,

I specified Southbend only because I didn't know that the lathe had been cloned as much as it has and with the request aimed initially at the USA I thought that might fit in better with their culture. If you can supply Boxford information instead it will be just as useful for my purpose.

So, are you able to provide Metric gearbox information? Particularly, a decent quality photo of the gearbox face, one that shows the figures clearly, the 'outside' gearing table that goes with it and the pitch of the leadscrew [I assume 3mm but I might be wrong].I am presently OK for the imperial version.

If you can't help with that, is there another Boxford owner reading this who can? I am happy to collect information from anyone who can supply it!

                    Thank you in advance

                    Brian

Pinched this from the Boxford Yahoo group files by Pidgeongreen. Hope he doesn't mind. A link would be better etiquette but wouldn't work to a yahoo group.

ok so image insertion has stopped working but it's in my Boxford album.

Not relevant to this thread but for completeness the crossfeed symbol belongs on the lower table and is half the rate of the logitudinal feed.

                        Hello Bazyle,

Thank you for that, another link in the chain. I won't say anything about the extraction if you don't. Was there anything on the outside gearing while you were there?

                        Regards

                        Brian

The gears are on the picture, 'g' being 50 or 20, 80 as an idler to fill the gap, and 45 on the gearbox input. The leadscrew pitch is also shown as 3mm.
