There is an air vent on the top of the box in SWMBO's dishwasher. It started to leak, turns out it just clips into the top of the box, and so it needs a squishy gasket to take up tolerance effects. The existing one has taken on a set, and no longer seals. Of course you can't get just the gasket, so I've had to buy the complete assembly to restore domestic harmony. I'm fed up of doing all the washing up. The new gasket is some kind of foam, presumably closed cell, and is 3mm thick. If I knew what to ask for and where to get it I could make a new one in a couple of minutes for when it inevitably goes again. Anyone got any idea?

          Would RTV sealant be suitable?

            Duncan,

From your description, it sounds like Plastazote

Try the Range or Hobbycraft. You might need to laminate a gasket from a couple of layers but you can get a foot square sheet for very little. Camping mats are closed cell foam and work too.

Duncan you might try Samco at link below for silicone rubber sponge sheets. They have many thicknesses 1/16" up. When I worked for a firm designing medical instrument washers (similar to a dishwasher but higher temps and with disinfection chemicals) our service guy in UK used Samco for gasketing materials in field repairs.

                  http://www.samco.co.uk/products/silicone-sponge.htm

Silicone sponge gasketing sheet is overkill for your application but will make a top notch repair you'll never have to mess with again. If you only need a small piece ie 6" x 6" they may give you a 'sample' sheet.

                  Good luck, JD

                    .

That's very uselful to know, JD … I wasn't aware that silicone rubber sponge sheets existed.

                    Thanks

Bear in mind the silicone sponge gaskets are rated for use with hot water, water vapour, and air, for low pressure applications only – not OK for high pressure water steam or air for example, just FYI. JD

EPDM foam is available in sheet form or various width sections, should do the job for low pressure applications
