That is very nice engraving, can I ask what was used to fill the engraving to produce the nice black lines.

        Hi Doug,

I just used a large permanent black marker, let it dry and then wiped over it with ISO to clean off the surplus.

Thanks for that Ron, nice and simple and seems to work well. I suppose if it rubs off after exposure to cutting oil etc after a while then a quick touch up will cure that.

Yes Doug, I think you can get proper ink for back filling but the permanent pen does ok and as you say its very easy to re-do should it need it. Some years ago I did an engraved scale with some Humbrol model paint and that lasted really well but it was more fiddly to do.

That cnc engraving is superb, professional quality. If the dial is steel, it might be possible to get a small pot of gun blue/black and then rub back the rest of the surface with some 800 wet and dry with oil. it would have to be extremely clean before blueing.

I just refurbed a micrometer and used an Edding 950 paintmarker following a You Tube recommendation. I bought it from Zoro, they also do a Markal brand equivalent. They are meant for marking up fabrications, metal stock etc and will supposedly write on dirty rusty oily surfaces and be permanent. Easy enough to apply by the rub on wipe off method, only just done it so can't vouch for permanence.

I took up Geoff,s offer (post above) to engrave the part on his CNC, he received it Saturday, machined it Sunday, posted it Monday and I received it back yesterday and it is excellent.

I hope I dont embarrass you Geoff but its another big thank you, very kind of you to do it for me, much appreciated.

The traditional fill is hard wax or, one the shop floor, a rub with an oily, grubby thumb.

I'm building the ACTO T & C grinder and have had the following number engraving done by " Modern Engraving" Stoke On Trent.

                        1. Two 50mm hand wheels 0-40

                        2. Two 70mm flanges 50-0-50 top and bottom.

                        3. one 70mm flange 90-0-90

                        4. one 100mm base 0-350

I had done the lines and knew I would mess them up if I tried stamping the numbers.

The cost was £50 for the lot which I consider VERY reasonable.

Ian, I think you got a real bargain there, the long established local engraver we had would probably have charged that sort of money but he is now retired. The new people that took over would probably want £50 per wheel…seriously.

I did some similar engraving with my Denford Triac when I made a fine downfeed thingy for my early 1980s Myford VMC.

I used Ucancam to make the gcode 'cos Vcarve was out of my price bracket. smiley
